The world's greatest, finest and most progressively outstanding camera is Leica M9-P. Pictured below in classic silver chrome finish, it weighs only 600 grams, measures 139 x 37 x 80 mm and costs RM 29,120 for the body alone which is meaningless as it is useless! The lenses start from RM 6,820 all the way to a staggering RM 38,000! So the minimum cost is RM 35,940 up to RM 67,120. If you think this is outrageous, the new Leica Showroom at Avenue K has a M9 Titanium at RM 118,888.88! What a lucky number for both Leica and the new owner! This M9 Titanium is the super-ultimate camera on Planet Earth! The Leica store at Avenue K also offers binoculars, rifle scopes, spotting scopes, binoculars and telescopes. Call 03-2163 1818 to reserve the M9 Titanium which is still available but hurry!
But not all Leicas cost the earth; the cheapest Leica costs RM 2,380 for the V-Lux 30! This compact camera slips into any bag or pocket so carry it with you at all times for that Leica Experience!
M9-P silver front.jpg

No ifs, buts or maybes.

It is so refreshing and relaxing and stress-free to find something that everyone agrees upon! Usually there is a slew of claimants as which brand is best or which specific camera is finest.

Even Leica's rivals and enemies have to swallow their gall and bile and admit Leica M9-P is better by leaps, bounds and jetplane flight.
M9-P silver front.jpg
This black version is the other option available with minor difference. The leathering allows great, sturdy grip. Professional photographers tended to tape over the trademark red Leica logo to make the camera even more lowkey and less ostentatious since everyone recognises the red circle with the word 'Leica' inside! To me, this is pure foolishness to hide the name after paying through the nose for it but then, I am not a professional photographer though mind you, anyone shooting from this camera produces professional results with eyes closed. Leica has succumbed to the pixmen's desire for anonymity and discretion and has removed the red dot symbol that elicits such strong emotion. Even the M9 lettering on the front has disappeared! Only the top deck carries the name!
L1270735.JPG
Sunil Kaul showing the RM 118,888.88 Leica M9 Titanium, the world's most expensive and finest camera! The box alone from compressed paper took weeks to complete!
L1270735.JPG
Kee Hua Chee was momentarily worth at least RM 118,888.88 excluding his bling!
L1270735.JPG
So did Sunil Kaul but he is the boss so he can hold this M9-P as long as he liked!

No need waste time arguing, punching each other in the mouth, pulling hair and scratching each other's eye out. The verdict is in and Leica is the best camera brand in the observable universe and its new Leica M9-P is the bestestest camera on this planet in this kalpa although in other kalpas there may be better cameras but we are living in this kalpa so we have to be realistic and adhere to rules of quantum physics.

I should know as I have a Leica Limited Edition D-Lux 4 so kindly given to me by Her Royal Highness Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom of Pahang. All she did was walked into a camera shop and asked for the best compact camera and she was shown the Leica which she bought!

Each time I produced my stylo-mylo Leica, the high class members of society would automatically murmur "A Leica...waaaa you must be so rich and successful"! Of course I AM rich (spiritually, mentally, psychically and physically but not yet financially!) and successful as the greatest journalist this side of the observable universe!

But I swear, all connoisseurs recognise and appreciate Leica cameras though they may not own one or even wish to buy one. But admiration? Totally! The same applies to connoisseurs looking at a Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Cartier tourbillon, gold Rolex, 200-carat diamond, painting by Leonardo da Vinci, superb Ming vase or Niagara Falls. You may not be interested to buy or have no money to get one or go to Niagara Falls but this does not stop you from marvelling at such works of art and nature.

I also LOVE the fact a Leica looks like it is an old vintage camera or that it comes straight from 1954...because the Leica M CAME from 1954! Howzat?

Yes, Leica stormed the photographic world in 1954 and INCREDIBLY, the lenses your grandfather bought in 1954 CAN still be used in the brand new Leica M9-P today! Yes, almost all the 1954 lenses can be used today which says a heck of a lot for the durability and timelessness of a Leica, all of which look alike!

This is another trademark of Leica found in the DNA of all best-selling brands. Notice how you recognise a Mercedes-Benz or Bentley or BMW instantly as each model shares similar traits. Or a quilted Chanel bag or Louis Vuitton Monogram bag that comes in countless versions but all using the same identical Monogram canvas? The Birkin handbag (around RM 37,000 with 3 year wait list) has not changed one iota since 1984! And proving a great design is ageless, this new Birkin was based on a 1892 design! In this case, one Leica looks remarkably like another Leica from a different series which proves great design stands the test of time...

...and wear and tear!

The sapphire glass LCD cover is almost unbreakable and impervious to, as William Shakespeare would say, the slings and arrows of normal usage of daily living! A vintage Leica is still used by professionals or kept as back-up while the professional pixman uses the new Leica. Of course I would not test Leica's claim its sapphire crystal cover is shatter-proof by smashing it against the wall but it is nice to know it is as rugged as it looks.

TECH DETAILS

The Leica M9-P.
Technologically at the same high level as the successful
Leica M9, the new M model offers special characteristics to meet the particular needs of
professional photographers. We have therefore created the M9-P as the ideal tool for
professional users who demand compact and discreet camera equipment with a long working
life and simultaneously appreciate the advantages and benefits of Leica M photography. The
‘P’ in its name, already used in the past for several models, positions the camera in the line of
Leica M cameras specially conceived on the basis of the wishes of professional
photographers. The Leica M9-P is a complement to the Leica M9. Both models will be
marketed together.

Since 1954, the Leica M system has stood for an unmistakable, individual kind of
photography and a very conscious photographic style. Because, with a Leica M, the
photographer becomes a part of the action in the process of capturing challenging and
creative images. The rangefinder frames precisely the shot the photographer envisages while
allowing a clear view of what is going on outside the viewfinder frame. This allows the
photographer to predict the decisive moment and capture it discreetly and reliably at the
right moment – in all fields of photography, from photojournalism and ‘available light’ to the
capture of discreet and aesthetic, fine-art images.

The functions of the Leica M are consistently constructed for extreme robustness and a long working life. Highest quality
materials, elaborate manufacturing processes and painstaking manual assembly guarantee M
cameras functional reliability for decades to come. The full system compatibility – almost all
lenses of the Leica M range built since 1954 can still be used on the latest M camera models
– is an important factor in the enduring value of the M series.

These core values of the Leica M system have been consistently maintained in the new M9-P.
The technical features of the Leica M9-P are identical to those of the M9, however, in
comparison, the typical Leica M product characteristics, like robustness and discretion, have
been further improved.

The Leica M9-P features an extremely scratch-resistant, sapphire crystal, cover
for its LCD screen. This material is so hard that it can only be worked with special diamond
cutting tools and is one of the world’s hardest materials. In consequence, the sapphire glass
LCD cover is extremely resistant to wear and almost unbreakable. In practical terms, it is so
resistant to so many kinds of wear and stresses that the camera is ideally equipped for many
years of reliable use. Thanks to an anti-reflective coating on both sides of the cover, image
reviewing on the screen of the M9-P in unfavourable lighting conditions is now even better.
This provides photographers with an ideal tool for optimum assessment of images both
during composition and after capture.

The leathering of the body of the M9-P is also particularly resistant to wear. The vulcanite
leathering features a more pronounced structure that lends the camera particularly good grip
characteristics. This means that the M9-P feels particularly safe and secure in the hand, a
fact that further enhances the already simple handling of the Leica M camera.

A further outstanding feature of the Leica M9-P is its minimalist styling with a focus only on
what is really necessary. Many professional photographers who already rely on Leica cameras
tend to tape over the Leica red dot to make their cameras as unobtrusive as possible. For this
reason, and in favour of absolute discretion, this typical red dot symbol and the M9 lettering
on the front of the new professional camera have been omitted. Instead, the top deck is now
engraved with the classical script form of the Leica name.

The Leica M9-P is now available in two different finishes from all authorised Leica dealers: in
black paint finish or in the traditional silver chrome version.

STYLO GOES TO 2012 LONDON OLYMPICS!

kee@fswmag.com

For the first time in Malaysian history and also in the history of the Olympics, a Malaysian fashion event of epic proportions will be held in London, the world's greatest city.
Jonny Dodge Dato' Nancy Yeoh at Trafalgar Square.jpg
Despite his name, Jonny Dodge is not a dodgy character and here the handsome hunk stands in Trafalgar Square with Dato Nancy Yeoh in a lught drizzle though I am not sure if the umbrellas are fashion props or functional. To match the gloomy dark weather, overcast sky, dire economic climate and displayed outfits, Dato Nancy Yeoh decided to wear black too so as to blend with the pavement! I think the guy in happy red sweater stands out more.

STYLO International has really hit the bigtime and jackpot with the staging of STYLO Fashion Grand Prix in conjunction with the London Summer Olympics 2012, the world's MOST IMPORTANT SPORTING event! In fact, Prince William wanted to hold his wedding in 2012 but was ordered by Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister David Cameron to push it to April this year so as not to compete for attention with London Olympics! More so when the 2012 Olympics will be the last as the world is supposed to end on 21/12/12 or is it 12/12/12? The Olympics will be in June so whatever happens (or does not happen) the Games will go on since Doomsday would still be 6 months to go.

If this event running concurrently with 2012 London Summer Olympics does not elevate this home-grown brand onto a pedestal like a Greek god (or goddess since founder owner operator Dato Nancy Yeoh is, I believe, a member of the female species) then nothing will. The gods atop Mount Olympus have already approve of this auspicious conjunction as it is already written in the sky. Just look up to the heavens tonight and you will see 'London Olympics 2012' linked to 'STYLO Fashion Grand Prix' and shining side by side in the night sky!

So far STYLO has debuted in Singapore so this London fest is the first time it will be held in Europe. Formidable as Dato Nancy Yeoh is, even she needs support in London as she is now only in the process of setting up STYLO London office in Mayfair which is the world's most prestigious and priciest area as in Monopoly the boardgame the most expensive lot is Mayfair followed by Park Lane!

After a successful run at the Formula 1, the country’s biggest fashion festival STYLO Fashion Grand Prix is gearing up to debut at the upcoming 2012 London Olympics.

According to its President and CEO Dato’ Nancy Yeoh, the London edition will see a strong fusion of Malaysian, Asian and Western fashion influences. It will preview this September at the stroke of midnight on the opening evening of London Fashion Week with its recycling theme "The 7 Deadly Sins: Recycling is the new Black" which is a perfectly politically correct theme yet infused with enough glamour and decadence to attract London's Hi-So which is a new term I coined to mean 'High Society'! So please give me credit each time you use this funky cool word! I have also registered 'Lo-So' (Low Society though it sounds like a Cantonese word!) and Mi-So (Middleclass Society and not Miso Soup ok?). Maybe for Mi-So I should use Mi-Ca-So as in Middle Class Society, what do you think? As for me, I am in Divi-So which is Divine Society as I am not really human nor of this world.

But I digress...

Anyway, The 7 Deadly Sins theme is not new to STYLO as it ran successfully with Lamborghini during the 2009 Singapore F1 season and with Mercedes- Benz at the 2010 Malaysian F1 Grand Prix on the back of a recycling campaign. The only difference here is that it will be brought to life at the height of the London fashion season as preview to the main event during the Olympics. This theme has been such a runaway success it should be duplicated all over the world the way 'Cats' or 'Phantom of the Opera' has several identikit shows (but obviously with different actors) playing in various cities simultaneously.

"We hope to be able to capture part of the attention of the international media and buyers present there at that time by keeping true to our DNA in providing ‘fashion-tainment. It is also our prelude to the main event in August of 2012,” said Yeoh, whose fabulous hourglass figure and fantastic cleavage should set London's tabloids on fire.

She said part of the presentation will feature several Malaysians who will work alongside their London contemporaries in the staging of the preview. Presenting their talents to this international audience will be Faisol Abdullah of Jendela KL, Mercedes-Benz STYLO Designer of the Year 2011, Lorenzo Peh, Mercedes-Benz STYLO Emerging Designer of the Year 2011 and A Cut Above featuring Winnie Loo and Faevian Yee.

In keeping with STYLO’s blueprint, London’s smart and fashionable set will be made to seek clues to its secret location. A total of 350 top guests will be handpicked in collaboration with co-host Dato’ Jimmy Choo and will await instructions at Trafalgar Square for directions to the fashion hideout somewhere in central London. I can confirm the Secret Venue will NOT be Buckingham Palace as rumoured nor will it be Prince William's home in Kensington Palace though he might be attending the party!

As the 7 Deadly Sins takes its name from the myriad of human emotions – Greed, Pride, Lust, Sloth, Envy, Gluttony and Wrath which have contributed to the deterioration of mankind and Mother Earth, designers will bring creations to life on the fashion runway that represented these sins of mankind. Messages of conservation will be communicated via avant-garde fashion creations constructed out of carton boxes, magazines, tin cans, plastic, newspapers, biodegradable fabrics and vintage clothing.

Waste not, want not!

Yeoh added “The festival has been engineered for a lively exchange of high fashion banter and gestures while taking in the diversity and multi-ethnicity that London has to offer. In many ways it is not unlike Malaysia with our fabulous melting-pot of cultures and we hope the fashion week will be able to create the much-needed prelude in the lead-up to the London Olympics.”

She added STYLO needs to debut a year ahead in order to build the much-needed awareness for the event. “While people in London may be intrigued by our concept so far, the fact remains they don’t know who we are and what we have back home. It is our hope our Malaysian fashion team will wow them and not be there just for the sake of it. Forward-planning and preparations will help bring us closer to our dream.”

GP Events Ltd, owned by prominent London personality Jonny Dodge, has been appointed as the official event partner who will be managing STYLO’s London debut.

It is a highly reputable organiser within the F1 Grand Prix circles and is responsible for the F1 concerts and events series in Europe and Asia. He is also co-owner of “Aura”, a prestigious club in Mayfair and popular haunt of top celebrities such as Madonna.

Taking center stage at the London debut is also the moving of STYLO’s International Office from Singapore to London in the last quarter of 2011 which marks yet another milestone for the company. And high time too since who is interested in a teeny weeny patch of land who needs water from us when STYLO can be consorting with European elite?

You cannot miss it as it sits smack in the heart of Bangkok's Golden Triangle, akin to KL's KLCC and Bukit Bintang. Like Suria KLCC and Pavilion, Ratchaprasong is home to all the designers' brands as all the top malls are to the left and right so whichever you turn, shopping awaits! If your Thai taxi driver cannot pronounce or understand 'Renaissance', just say 'Gaysorn Plaza' or 'Erawan temple' and he will drive you there. Renaissance is opposite Gaysorn Plaza, home to Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton etc and Erawan Shrine attached to Grand Hyatt hotel is Bangkok's most famous little shrine and many Malaysians come here to pray and return to give thanks once granted. Once I took part in TAT's Shopping Contest and I prayed to the 4-Face Brahma statue and of course I won, 100,000 baht worth of shopping voucher!

THE BLUE HUE ICON AKA RENAISSANCE BANGKOK!
The latest 5-star hotel in Bangkok is Renaissance, located in the heart of Ratchaprasong, equivalent to KL’s Bukit Bintang
In a city known for glamorous, ritzy and superlative hotels, one is hard pressed to find a hotel that stands out. Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong does that with aplomb as it is physically outstanding. Clad in blue glass, it is impossible to miss since its unusual hue sticks out prominently among sedate coloured buildings.
Renaissance Bangkok is also the first in the chain to be dressed in the new exterior colour that goes with the revamp of its image. Since its opening in 2010 it has become the benchmark for all new and refurbished Renaissances. From the usual ho-hum 5-star hotel which looks like clones of each other, the new Renaissance, which aptly means ‘new life’, ‘rebirth’ or ‘revival’, has positioned itself as a hip and happening hotel geared for the young and failing that, young-at-heart.
It is still grand but no longer of the grande dame species. Gone are the marble balustrades, sweeping staircase, gilded pillars and acres of carpet. Instead of chandeliers reminiscent of the Victorian era, the lighting system is three storey high, blinks, changes colour and uses diodes instead of bulbs.
Colours are wild and wonderfully wacky. No traditional soothing cream, brown and earthy tones. Unconvention rules. Think of the discos of the 1980s with its garish, throbbing strob lights and you get the drift. It is as if ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and Studio 54 have conspired for a comeback without the bell bottoms and beatniks.
Thai design details are to be admired in their various manifestations in glass, stainless steel, marble, tanganika wood and engraved stone fused with Italian marble and Portoro gold.
Artfully incorporated are images of Cassia Fistula or Ratchapruek, the national flower of Thailand, reflected, I am told, in glass, stone and walls placed randomly. They are so well fused into the surroundings as I fail to notice any flowery details until they are pointed to me. Fresh, real floral installations, of which there are also many, do a better job impressing guests.
The colour palette is strident but never tacky as this is resolutely a third millennium establishment. “The concept is fun and light-heartedness as guests always smile as they enter the lobby,” says W???/. “The décor is informal and feels like a private club so guests become relaxed quickly as they don’t feel like people are checking their behaviour.”
All 5-star lobbies have comfy chairs but a glaring lack of reading materials unless you are a guest and can retrieve a newspaper from concierge. Here, there are upscale magazines like Solitaire, JetGala, Vogue, W and Thai fashion and social glossies that require no knowledge of the language as you just gawk at the sexy models and members of Bangkok’s ‘hi-so’, the local term for ‘high society’.
Another amusing surprise---board games and puzzles placed on the low tables! While waiting for hubby to settle the bill or return from the loo, one can now indulge in some fun metal, wood and cardboard puzzles that only need basic skills but should keep you entertained for the next quarter hour.
I meander towards Lobby Lounge, dressed in mesmerising purple, orange, yellow and flecks of green (the lounge, not me) which change according to the sunlight streaming through the coloured panels. This is a major wateringhole for Bangkok’s young elite so planting yourself at R Bar or on the velvet purple chair at night is a surefire way to google at the Beautiful People.
The four eateries include Flavors Café serving Thai and international cuisine, Fei Ya for contemporary northern Chinese cooking and signature Peking Duck, La Tavola for superb Italian specialties and H2O for cocktails and nibbles by the pool.
Royal Maneeya Ballroom is Bangkok’s most popular venue for galas and especially weddings, as the bride and groom can drive right in. This is not a figure of speech but a physical reality as the newly betrothed can drive into the ballroom in their Rolls-Royce or jalopy! An industrial sized lift at the back allows heavy equipment and vehicles to be transported into the 6-metre high Maneeya Ballroom on the mezzanine floor.
All Thai hotels boast a good spa and Renaissance is no different with Quan Spa specialising in water based treatments and Vichy baths.
The pool on the topmost floor overlooking the City of Angels is the talk of town as passersby on the road assume it is a disco in full swing due to the dramatic light show! The pool is sleekly modernist with infinity pool, glass walls and sculptural features but the flashes of colours from the elaborate lighting system bounce off the waters and onto the glass walls which produce pulsating effects to stunned viewers at street level. Already the pool’s scintillating light show is being used as a landmark for directions!
And so to bed…with a bath next to it!
My room, clad in rich royal purple, comes with a gleaming white bath tub by the side of my bed although I could not leap from bed into the tub as both are separated by a glass wall. Some hotels have a wall with louver wooden windows which can be raised or lowered for privacy but Renaissance offers no such false modesty, based on the assumption your bedmate must have seen you in-flagrante at some point so this is not an issue. It is certainly a tantalising thought, seeing your partner soaking in the tub as you laze and gaze in bed in great admiration.
Luxurious, fun and funky as your room may be, tourists will insist on going out. Renaissance Bangkok is spot on for shopping. Turn right and it is Chidlom Central and Emporium. Turn left and it is Gaysorn Plaza, Central World and further afield Paragon, Siam Centre and MBK Plaza. Perfect for sightseeing elsewhere and shopping on the last day. Rates from RM 400 per night.
