EASTER IN HONG KONG AT METROPARK HOTEL WANCHAI

KEE@FSWMAG.COM

EASTER IS COMING, A TIME O REFLECT ON HOW JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD TO PROMISE US ETERNAL LIFE AFTER SALVATION.

WHILE HONGKONG IS NOT THE IDEAL PLACE FOR A CHRISTIAN PILGRIMAGE, IT IS IDEAL FOR A HOLIDAY AND THE IDEAL HOTEL TO CALL HOME IS METROPARK AT WANCHAI.

Many will know Wanchai as the redlight district made famous by Suzy Wong in the hit movie 'The World of Suzy Woong', based on the best selling 1957 novel by Richard Mason. It tells the story of Robert Lomax,a young Englishman who went to Malaya, our dear homeland, to work in a plantation.

Then he decided to try his hand at being an artist and he foolishly went to exotic Hong Kong. If only he had stayed in Malaya, Kuala Lumpur would have been the venue for his shenadigans and our capital would be famous, especially our redlight district of Bukit Bintang and Chow Kit Road!

In Hong Kong, our hero stayed at the Nam Kok hotel where he met Suzy Wong the funny, amusing, sad, clever 'hooker with heart of gold'. Well , you can guess what happened! Robert Lomax did not realise Nam Kok hotel was an unofficial brothel for the bar girls but when he did, he found it even more charming.

Nam Kok hotel was based loosely on luk Kwok hotel on Gloucester Road, Wanchai which has been redeveloped in the 1980s and is now a 4-star, respectable hotel charging RM 600 a night.

Wanchai is still sleazy in certain parts but of course it adds to the overall appeal as I never like sanitised, clinical places where no microbes, good or bad, can thrive. But it is situated on Hong Kong island and next to Admiralty and Central to the left and Causeway Bay to the right.

The location for Metropark is ideal as it is at the doorstep of Pacific Place, a serious shopper's paradise where some of the world's best brands call home.
