SOTHEBY’S IS DELIGHTED to present Beyond Limits, its annual selling exhibition of monumental sculpture staged in the historic grounds of Chatsworth House, which is now into

its seventh year. This essential fixture in the arts calendar will be on view from 7th September to 28th October 2012. For the first time Beyond Limits will showcase the work of a single artist, Barry Flanagan, RA OBE (1941-2009).

Commenting on this year’s Beyond Limits, Alexander Platon, Sotheby’s Senior Director and Head of Private Sales, Europe, said: “It is especially exciting to be presenting these fundamentally British sculptures in this quintessentially British setting during the year of the Cultural Olympiad. The raised awareness of British art being promoted by a wonderful range of exhibitions across the country throughout 2012 creates a perfect opportunity to showcase some of Barry Flanagan’s beloved late works”.

Following Tate Britain’s recent retrospective exhibition Barry Flanagan: Early Works 1965–1982, which closed in January, Sotheby’s is presenting a selection of the artist’s critically acclaimed, monumental late works. His characteristic bronze hares, represented in a variety of highly inventive guises, will be installed throughout the gardens in a witty and engaging counterpoint to the Chatsworth grounds.

The gardens will provide an extraordinary organic environment within which the sculptures innate qualities will find heightened expression; emphasising the juxtaposition between contemporary aesthetics and human experience. The ancestral British home, combined with the work of an quintessentially British sculptor, are expected to draw an international audience from America, Asia and the Middle East, where works by Flanagan are avidly collected.

The sculptures included in the Beyond Limits exhibition are available for purchase by private sale and are currently
in the process of being installed, with new works arriving and being placed in to position on a weekly – and sometimes daily – basis.
