An Eu Yan Sang hamper starts from an affordable RM 89 to an unaffordable RM 23,888 but such mouthwatering hampers DO sell! Blessed are their recipients! Though I bet most of these RM 23,888 hampers go to the buyer's own families!

It started in 1873 when Eu Kong left his village of Foshan, Guangdong province in China to seek his fortune in Malaya. He settled in the small mining town of Gopeng in Perak.

Here the young man noticed the tin miners toiled and slaved under horrendous conditions while their towkays lived in luxury. The wretched miners had to use opium to alleviate their pains and emotional suffering and this opiate was hardly the most conducive medication.

Eu Kong began using traditional Chinese herbs and remedies to nurse and improve their health despite the poor working conditions.

Eu Kong's herbal health drinks were so effective he soon opened his first shop Yan Sang in 1879.

Eu Kong carefully chose the name 'Yan Sang' which means 'Caring for Mankind'. His only son Eu Tong Sen carried on his father's goal and the family business boomed in Malaya and Singapore. Eu Tong Sen became a big player in the mining and rubber plantation business.

Eventually in a reversal of role, Eu Tong Sen's chinese herbal business spread from Southeast Asia back to its homeland China!

Eu Tong Sen's immense fortune allowed him to elevate 'caring for mankind' further as he became a philanthropist, subscribing to the ancient Chinese belief 'one cannot bring one's money into heaven'. He contributed generously to local communities and often did incognito and  without fanfare.

Today, Eu Yan Sang is the global leader in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) with over 300 products using over a 1,000 different herbs and natural ingredients.

In Hong Kong, Eu Yan Sang is so wellknown and entrenched many Hongkees assumed it is a local Hong Kong company! Ditto for Eu Yan Sang in China where most mainlanders take for granted the company is local and few realise it is from Malaysia!

Today there are 183 Eu Yan Sang stores in Malaysia, Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong and China! Eu Yan Sang is listed in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Eu Yan Sang also operates 23 Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinics in Malaysia and Singapore where patients can receive medical diagnosis and herbal medication and 2 Integrative Medical Centres in Hong Kong.

Eu Yan Sang is now ably captained by Dato Anne Eu, wife of the late chairman Joseph William Yee Eu. A former Investment Manager for conglomerate Sime Darby Insurance, Dato Anne Eu was called up from retirement when her husband passed away and she was seen by the Board as the best candidate to continue the Eu Yan Sang legacy.

Like Cory Aquino the widow who became President of Philippines, Dato Anne Eu rose to the occasion and steered Eu Yan Sang to greater heights year after year as profits rose. But unlike Cory Aquino who was a housewife, Dato Anne Eu is a trained businesswoman who knows the ins and outs of the corporate world.

Under Dato Anne's stewardship, Eu Yan Sang won the Gold Medal in the 2012 Putra Brand Awards Malaysia, a repeat of its first win in 2010!

Eu Yan Sang also won the BrandLaureate Master Awards 2011 for Integrative Healthcare.

Eu Yan Sang's Chinese New Year hampers are the most coveted gifts as each contains healthy Eu Yan Sang products, from essence of chicken to cordyceps to the best ginseng and bird's nest money and love can buy!
