KL 2013

MERCEDES-BENZ STYLO FASHION AWARDS GALA
Night simultaneously witnesses launch of Aloft KL Sentral

It was grand night of glamour and glitz at the Mercedes-Benz STYLO Fashion Awards 2013 themed ‘The Voodoo Ball”. The awards night, billed as the high spot of the 7-day fashion festival, was a true red-carpet event as the invited guests came dressed in their dapper suits and ball gowns to celebrate a glittering night of fashion excellence.

Gracing the event was Formula One safety driver, Bernd Maylander. He was joined at the event by the crème de le crème of Malaysian high society, which included dignitaries, socialites, celebrities, and many more, making the event a truly impressive affair.

Presented by luxury icon Mercedes-Benz, the gala event also coincides with the beginning of the Kuala Lumpur Formula One Grand Prix weekend, from Friday, 22 March until Sunday, 24 March 2013. STYLO KL Fashion Grand Prix is one of Tourism Malaysia’s KL Grand Prix City’s line-up of fringe events in conjunction with the F1 race in Malaysia.

Mr Roland Folger, the President and CEO of Mercedes Benz Malaysia, said in his opening speech, “Since Mercedes-Benz Malaysia launched the World Fashion Exchange with STYLO during our 125th Anniversary 2 years ago, we have helped move the Malaysian fashion industry internationally. Last year, we were pleased to take the Designer of the Year 2012, Bill Keith and Emerging Designer of the Year 2012, Mohd Hanif to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Mexico City. This year it will be to Prague.”

He added, “Through the Mercedes-Benz STYLO Awards Gala, we recognise and award the best players in the local fashion industry and those who have contributed to the world of fashion in Malaysia.  We hope to continue to help unearth exceptional talents through this platform, and to present them at international fashion weeks around the world.”

The night also witnesses the crowning of the much awaited Emerging Designer of the Year 2013 winner. The finals held previously on the second day of the week long FGP, saw 12 finalists presenting stunning avant garde designs using recyclable items like plastic bottles, rubbish bags, tubes, polystyrene  and strings, to name a few. They were judged by heads of seven Asian countries’ top  fashion associations namely Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia together with MODA, YODA & BDA under the Asia Fashion Week and Rainforest Initiative banner. This year the winner wins the coveted title to showcase at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Prague in September and to travel with STYLO to showcase at various cities around the world.

The finalists took the stage on last time with their designs tonight whilst waiting in nervous anticipation for the winner’s name to be announced.

According to Dato’ Nancy Yeoh, President and CEO of STYLO International “This year, once again, we continue our efforts to recognise the best in the fashion industry. As we have on our opening night, having presented the Lifetime Achievement Award 2013 to Minster of Tourism, YB Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen which is well deserved considering her tireless contributions to the fashion industry. As such, it is only natural we keep raising the bar to pick the best in Malaysia to be our fashion ambassadors to the world with our Designer of the Year and Emerging Designer of the Year awards.”

The night’s fashion showcase included designs by celebrated Czech designer, La Formela, all the way from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Prague and opening the show was top Czech supermodel, Vanda Knapkova.

Seasoned designers Melinda Looi, Jovian Mandagie and fresh from Mexico City’s Mercedes- Benz Fashion Week debut, last year’s Emerging Designer 2012, Mohd Hanif presented their distinctive designs amidst approving claps and cheers from the audience.

The night continued with the much awaited official launch of Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral which has been the official venue for the week long Mercedes-Benz STYLO FGP 2013. Creating much abuzz since the start of FGP in the news, the urban-influenced, modern in design and a social guest experience catered to the next generation of travellers, is set to be a hit with the Gen-Ys when it opens its doors to the public tomorrow. Situated in the new business hub of Kuala Lumpur, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral, ‘A Vision of W Hotels’ and the Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ is the largest Aloft Hotel in the world.

Quoted Mr Lai Voon Hoon, owner of Aloft KL Sentral, “Infused with the DNA of W Hotels, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral will cater to the modern traveller seeking a unique experience. With urban-inspired design, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral guestrooms will feature loft-like decor with soaring eleven-foot ceilings. We are targeting the new generation of travellers whereby the hotel will offer free wireless internet access throughout the whole hotel, the signature W xyz(SM) bar, Nook, an all day dining venue and the Polynesian themed rooftop MAI bar, amongst other cool facilities.”

Guests were entertained by a traditional lion dance before being led to a tour of the hotel by Mr Lai Voon Hoon. They were then ushered to the Polynesian themed rooftop MAI bar, overlooking the beautiful KL skyline where the celebrations continued well into the night.

STYLO International was set up to create fringe events to support world class motorsport activities in the region. Motorsport activities have seen tremendous jump in Asia as it is the sports of choice for the affluent male; the same way affluent females covert couture fashion. Hence, the use of fashion as the excuse for this stylish fringe activity. STYLO is essentially a Malaysian slang for the word ‘style’. The ‘O’ in STYLO denotes that fashion evolves in a circle.

We were stunned speechless at the opening act as this was not a sleepwear show and pyjamas are really unsuitable to show on stage!

June Wong, managing editor of The Star also presented Hair Designer of the Year 2013 to Faevien Yee. The winner should NOT wear this jacket which appeared as if his shoulder is sprinkled with dandruff! As a hair designer, this can kill his career!

See how terrible he looks? Dandruff all over his jacket! Actually it is part of the design but some may think poor Faevien Yee is suffering from dandruff!
