MIGF 2015---DEWAKAN AT NEW KDU COLLEGE UNIVERSITY IN SHAH ALAM IS KL'S BEST KEPT SECRET BUT NO LONGER AFTER THIS BLOG!

DEWAKAN restaurant is an educational entrepreneurial effort of KDU University College

Only the most finicky, fastidious and fanatical foodie have heard of Dewakan restaurant but now the cat's out of the bag though Dewakan has never been hiding under its laurels as it deserves every leaf!

The location is fraught with dangers; everyone assumes Dewakan is located not far from KL since it is located at Damansara Jaya at SS22/41. Allocate 20 minutes drive you say.

Wrong!

That is KDU College PJ which is the original and very de famous but it is different and an hour away from KDU University College where Dewakan is located! The KDU in Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya is is 'KDU College' whereas the new, big one is 'KDU University College'! The second one has 'University' as part its name and is in Glenmarie in Shah Alam!

Even after arriving at Utropolis (short for University Metropolis) in KDU University College, it is not easy to find Dewakan as it is located deep inside the campus next to the new shopping mall and condo. You cannot see it from the main road and there are no clues a fine dining restaurant lurks inside the University College (the name sounds redundant and repetitive but Malaysian law says a University College must exists for 5 years before it can ditch the lower ranking 'college' from its name).

If you park outside, it is a bit of a trek in so drive right in and park metres from Dewakan.

The sign is discreet so don't look for blinking neons and blaring music with scantily clad females welcoming you inside.

Inside, all is calm, cool and classy.

I assume Dewakan is an amalgam of Dewan Makan (Malay for Dining Hall which makes sense).

Wrong.

Dewakan stands for 'Dewa Makan' which means, omigod, 'Deities Eating'!

Well, I guess it is apt since the food is worthy of the gods!

In Malay, 'dewa' means male deities and 'dewi' means female deities. Dewas are lower ranking than Gods and Goddesses and originate from Hinduism.

I assume the decor is very Melayu so I wore frightfully expensive, hand blocked batek shirt with Nagas (dragons) to blend with the furniture since I am a wallflower type. Only to discover the decor is sleek, stylish and ultra modern like Ruyi restaurant!

Dewakan seats only around 30 and has no long table so we all had to sit at individual round tables of 5 or 6.

The special MIGF 6-course Dinner costs RM 165 without wine and RM 250 with wine.  The 10-course dinner costs RM 207 without wine and Dewakan is helmed by super chef Darren Teoh.

Explains restaurant manager Hafriz Mazlan, "To us, Dewakan means food from God, and as restaurant we want honour the bounty and blessing given to our land. We want connect ingredients from sea, farms, mountains and jungle to a canvas that is our plate in the most interesting way we know how."

Like I said, the food at Dewakan is worthy of the gods and what is good for them is good for us mortals.
