Born in Singapore in 1992, Void is Loi Cai Xiang’s first solo exhibition. A graduate from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), Cai Xiang works mainly in oil and draws inspiration from personal experiences and reflections of his environment in exploring different modes of representation through realism.

Cai Xiang says, “This constant need to define a void that resides between us and the physical world is an attempt to make sense and create a synthetic connection to explain a state of being. This endeavour is a personal exploration for sensibility to define a private gulf that exists between my conscious and subconscious state of mind.”

Void articulates an explosive disquiet, beguiling tableaus otherwise reminiscent of the traditional and academic. They juxtapose ideas inspired by latent symbols attached to references such as pelicans in traditional Chinese culture, furniture from his family home and the industrial environment where his previous studio was located.

Cai Xiang is a recipient of Tan Chay Bing and Ngee Ann Kongsi Scholarships and had exhibited at various art shows in Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore. His works are currently collected by private collectors and corporation such as Clifton and Asia Capital Reinsurance.

Dress Up
Solo exhibition by Dyn

Opening Date:            27 July 2017, Thursday, 7pm
Exhibition Period:       27 July - 20 August 2017
Venue:                        Chan + Hori Contemporary
                                   6 Lock Road Gillman Barracks
                                   #02-09 Singapore 108934

Dress Up could be described as Safaruddin Bin Abdul Hamid aka Dyn’s homecoming solo exhibition with Chan + Hori Contemporary. Born in Singapore in 1977, Dyn has always been interested in engaging the physical aspect of iconic architectures in response to frequent refurbishment of old and new buildings seen in Singapore and keeping up with its ever-evolving physical landscape.

Traversing the globe to connect with international icons of modernity such as the Statue of Liberty from New York, USA and the Opera House in Sydney, Australia, this shift departs from his usual stripped down snapshots of nostalgic landmarks in Singapore such as the former Katong bakery in the distinctive red brick house on East Coast Road. Here, Dyn layers a pastiche of colours, creating camouflages that shifts our perspective and almost obliterate the icons.

Dyn obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of technology (RMIT) in Australia, and later his Master's Degree in Fine Arts from Open University at LASALLE - SIA College of the Arts. He first showcased his works in Chan Hampe Galleries in 2011 and held subsequent solo exhibitions with the gallery in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2010, he exhibited at the Karin Weber Gallery in Hong Kong and was a recipient of the Winston Oh Travel Scholarship in 2002 and 2004, and The Della Butcher Award (Certificate of Merit) in 2003.

Table for 2 is 4... after the Big Bang
Exhibition Period:       14 July - 11 October 2017
Venue:                      Esplanade Concourse

"Imagining the intimate and domestic scene of a couple conversing after their meal, Vertical Submarine’s sculptural installation expands the dining table in scale, fragmenting and flipping the pieces, with all the meaningful elements that are usually above and below the table packed into a “sandwich” that exists within the typically overlooked space of a table top. The abstracted shards seem as if they are emerging from and sinking into the Concourse steps in a moment of simultaneous creation and destruction."

"Clearly, the question of how best to negotiate the delicate balance between preserving paradise and gunning for progress and economic growth bothers artists from other countries in the region as well. Back home in Singapore, Malaysian (Sabah-born) artist Chris Chong Chan Fui‘s gorgeous mechanical plant and flower sculptures and detailed botanical illustrations are on display, till 23 July, at Chan + Hori Contemporary."
