PavilionNOW 2017: COIR PAVILION

Sept 15, 2017 – March 17, 2018

PavilionNOW is an annual design project by Shalini Ganendra Fine Art, celebrating  Malaysian design talent through  collaboration and innovation.  A premiere, up and coming  Malaysian designer or architect, is invited to  create and construct a pavilion at SGFA’s award winning green building,  Gallery Residence (designed by Ken Yeang).  PavilionNOW emphasizes the beauty and efficacy of local materials used by Malaysian talent  for innovative build.

COIR Pavilion is the 2017 Edition of the PavilionNOW developed by  design firm POW Ideas, to  open  on 15th September 2017.

Using modified  natural fibre extracted from coconut husks (coir), POW Ideas has built a modular, interlocking structure created at the workshop of Taylor’s University.

Against the backdrop of  SGFA’s sustainable and award-winning Gallery Residence, COIR Pavilion showcases the potential of coconut fibre and suggests new artistic dimensions and domestic applications for the common material.

COIR Pavilion will remain at SGFA’s Gallery Residence for 6 months, where it aims to  become a cornerstone of inspiration for the multi-disciplinary:  artistic, performance and educational projects. The hope is that each annual pavilion will be replicated to live on in other spaces, and continue to inspire generations to come.

ABOUT:

Shalini Ganendra Fine Art is one of the most established galleries in Malaysia.  Since 1998, SGFA’s holistic approach to art representation and expertise in the contemporary art of Asian emerging regions has established the organisation’s distinctive presence as a placemaker, advisor and culture pioneer. Educational and research programs led by SGFA, including PavilionNOW, are important facilitators of engagement and cross cultural development within, with and beyond South East Asia.

POW Ideas are an architecture collaborative based in Kuala Lumpur founded by Kyle E and Jun Ong. Both trained as architects in Melbourne & London, but have since explored different trajectories of interest: Kyle with landscape architecture and Jun with light art.  The name reflects the collective’s attitude towards projects, i.e. with a ‘POW!’   With a flair for innovation and material exploration, the collective strive to challenge assumptions, and to push the limits of built form across all fields of design.
