UNFORGETTABLE INTERIORS EMERGE AS TRIUMPHANT AWARD WINNERS

Designer Concept announces the winners of the
Designer of the Year Awards (DOTY) 2017

Decked in an elegant all-black theme, Designer Concept magazine – the organiser of the Designer of the Year Awards (DOTY) 2017 – celebrated victories with award-winning interior design firms at RUYI & LYN Restaurant & Lounge.

With ELYZA’S® as this year’s official partner, the prestigious award ceremony marked another milestone in the local interior design scene as both professional local and international designers, architects, industry players and lifestyle leaders came together in unison for this outstanding recognition of quality and creativity.

Among the dignitaries who attended were Puan Sri Datin Seri (Dr) Susan Cheah (Exco-Member of Sunway Group), Tan Sri Richard Koh (Founder/CEO of Only World Group), Dato’ Sri Desmond To (Co-founder and President of Aladdin Group), Dato’ Richard Teo and Datin Winnie Loo (Founder of A Cut Above Group of Salons), Dato’ Garry Chua (President of Malaysia Retail Chain Association), Dato’ Neoh Soo Keat (Founder and Managing Director of Trinity Group) and supermodel Amber Chia.

An annual event that has proven to be an award of significance to the interior design field, DOTY 2017 ran with the tagline “The Infinity”, which inherently echoed each interior designer’s undying passion and continual efforts of inspiring a better future through design.

Besides adding in five winners into the Best Interior Design (Commercial) category, DOTY 2017 were also proud to introduce four new award categories, namely the Lifetime Achievement Award, Asia’s Most Influential Designer Award, Asia’s Most Prestigious Design Award and Best Product Design Award.

Ultimately reserved for the crème de la crème, the Lifetime Achievement Award recognises an individual's outstanding leadership and contribution to the design and architecture industry. Naturally, the first recipient of this award was none other than the ‘Queen of the Curve’, the late Zaha Hadid of the reputable architectural firm, Zaha Hadid Architects.

On the other hand, the nominations for Asia’s Most Influential Designer Award lied in the hands of the editorial team at Designer Concept, where a handful of individuals were selected due to the impact and contribution they were generating for the design community in Asia.

This award also acted as a platform to honor outstanding and iconic designers who were influencing lives through their designs and creations from all over the world, and the three winners were none other than Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu (Neri&Hu Design and Research Office), Paolo Cucchi (PCA Architecture) and Steve Leung (Steve Leung Designers).

Asia’s Most Prestigious Design Award is the highest recognition for any interior design firm that has contributed vastly in terms of quality design and clever use of space, material and technology.

With this, DOTY gave a tribute to these outstanding interior design firms that delivered unique designs in line with their client’s philosophy and industry all around the world — ST Concepts, The Roof Studio and Yong Studio Sdn Bhd.

Lastly, the Best Product Design Award paid homage to some of the best home-related product designs that clearly demonstrated merit in the following assessment categories: designs that met or exceeded a certain standard, had superior design and showed potential for future-oriented designs. The four winners of this category are:
  • Dornbracht, winner of Best Product Design (Bathroom) category
  • GROHE Essence Colours, winner of Best Product Design (Bathroom) category
  • Invisible Grille Sdn Bhd, winner of Best Product Design (Exterior) category
  • Republic of Fritz Hansen, winner of Best Product Design (Furniture) category

About DOTY 2017

Contestants were graded solely based on the quality of their entries, with their identities and company backgrounds kept anonymous to ensure fair deliberations. The entries were also judged based on key criteria such as design, spatial layout, use of colours and materials.

DOTY 2017 received an overwhelming response of 140 entries and after the first round of screening, projects from a total of 65 finalists were selected and handed over to the professional judges for the final judging process.

From there, 10 from the Residential category, 10 from the Commerical category, three from the Showhouse category and three from the Rising Star category were chosen as winners. Meanwhile, the 26 winners were awarded with glorious trophies adorned with intricate Liuli crystals that were sponsored by LiuLiGongFang.
