THE ROYAL THAI EMBASSY AND THE THAI AMBASSADOR HOSTED A GRAND CELEBRATION WITH NEARLY 450 GUESTS IN THE GRAND BALLROOM OF ROYALE CHULAN HOTEL, ONE OF MALAYSIA'S MOST PRESTIGIOUS 5-STAR HOTEL IN THE HEART OF THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE.

IT WAS TO MARK THE AUSPICIOUS OCCASION OF THE 84TH BIRTHDAY ANNIVERSARY OF HIS MAJESTY KING BHUMIBOL ADULYADEJ OF THAILAND AND WAS HOSTED BY THAI AMBASSADOR HIS EXCELLENCY MR THANA DUANGRATANA AND HIS SPOUSE MRS CHUTIMA DUANGRATANA.

The 84th birthday if the King of Thailand was especially auspicious as it marked the 7th cycle of the 12-year animal calendar as each cycle takes 12 years and the 7th cycle means His Majesty had lived 84 years. All Thais and friends of Thailand pray His Majesty will continue to reign into the 8th cycle.

All Thailand was delighted and thanked Buddha as King Bhumidol Adulyadej was well enough to make a live broadcast where he urged all Thais to unite to help those affected by the floods. The King was taken from the wheelchair from the Bangkok hospital to the Grand Palace where he and the entire Royal Family waved to the cheering crowd below. Most had tears in their eyes as they love their King and Royal Family so much and to be able to see and hear His Majesty the King of Thailand who they refer to as 'Lord of Life' was indeed a tremendous honour and blessing.

The KL party was graced by Dato' Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Abdul Aziz, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department who represented the Malaysian government. Also present was Senator A. Kohilan Pillay from Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dato Seri Mohd Nazri and Thai ambassador HE Thana Duangratana toasted each other's Head of State with orange juice as the large screens showed the visit of the King and Queen of Malaysia, DYMM Yang DiPertuan Agong Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin and Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah to Bangkok.

Our King and Queen attended the 80th birthday of the King of Thailand and several images of this illustrious event were shown on the huge screens.

Thai Airways and TAT flew in a dance troupe who performed traditional Thai dances from the northern provinces and there was even a Muay Thai boxing demonstration.

The food was superb but were mostly Malaysian though there were some traditional Thai dishes like pahd thai and desserts. The fruits were obviously flown in from Bangkok as the pineapples were so sweet and delicious, so UNLIKE our local ones which usually leave a bitter, tart and lingering after taste! I must devoured the equivalent of 2 pineapples and at least 10 mangoes!

The Thai dancers were the star attraction but my friend who I brought also gave the dancers a run fro the money. She was none other than Nathalie van Dekker the reigning Miss International Tourism form Holland! Everyone wanted to be photographed with her and usual, Nathalie was ever obliging. She must have posed with at least 300 as everyone had a camera or used their phone. It was not every day one got to pose with a beauty queen who looked like a living Barbie doll with her blonde locks and pretty features.

A few men told me not to use their photos as their girl friends, wives and lovers who were left at home might get jealous. More so when they are Plain Janes!
