SUNGAI WANG PLAZA CELEBRATES 35 GLORIOUS YEARS WITH 35 DESIGNERS FROM MODA

KEE@FSWMAG.COM

SUNGAI WANG PLAZA WITHOUT DOUBT REMAINS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SHOPPING CENTRES---YES THIS IS TRUE! OF COURSE EVERYONE THINKS I ONLY SHOP AT LOUIS VUITTON, HERMES, VERSACE, GUCCI, PRADA, CHANEL, FERRAGAMO, MELIUM BOUTIQUES AND GRAFF AND ALL THE REST OF THE WORLD FAMOUS BOUTIQUES WHICH IS TRUE AS I WAS BORN WITH A CARTIER SILVER SPOON STUFFED DEEP INSIDE MY MOUTH.

But this does not mean I don't hobnob with peasants and those having normal red blood coursing through their veins unlike my blood is which blue of course. We blue-blooded, highborn with the mandate of heaven do occasionally consort with members of the working class and even servants (we are not allowed to call them slaves anymore) as we are very kind and continue to speak to people who do not have millions of cash attached to their names or bottomless pockets.

Anyway, though I am to the manor born and was smuggled out of then evil communist China before the reds could slit my imperial throat and raised in quiet Kota Baru, Kelantan where none suspected my imperial links, I still like consorting with those who frequent Sungai Wang Plaza as they are hip, happening and young.

If you are feeling your age or worse, feeling older than you are, a visit to Sungai Wang Plaza is an instant cure. Wandering aimlessly as I am wont to do, you will feel rejuvenated at the fun and funky stuff only Sungai Wang can offer. On my own and without any event to attend, I sail into Sungai Wang at least six times a year just to keep abreast with street creed.

I think the name says it all; Sungai Wang means Money River and it has been awashed with liquidity for the last 35 years. In fact Sungai Wang was already the hottest mall when the thirty-somethings were just sperm swimming inside their fathers' balls!

Yup, Sungai Wang was prospered like a river of money compared to Lot 10 across the road and even Bukit Bintang Plaza which is physically attached to it! Must be the feng shui! Sungai Wang is tjhe rich big brother orTaiko while these two immediate malls in identikit locations never quite took off! There are ample empty shoplots in BB Plaza which is a step away but Sungai Wang never has shuttered shops as even when they change hands, it usually takes a few days of frantic renovation before they reopen under new onwership.

My friend Alice owns one shoplot which she bought for RM 250,000 and is worth RM 3 million today. Well, it took 25 years but you must admit it was a good buy. She rents it out for RM 28,000 as it is in a prime location and then rents a similar shoplot in an obscure section for RM 8,000! She nets in cash RM 20,000 per month and her RM 8,000-a-month shop continues to generate a steady income! Good cash cow or what!

Though there are NO international labels in the Louis Vuitton league, the many shops and boutiques offer nice clothes, off beat gear and funky stuff at affordable prices and you can usually bargain too! Everything and everyone is youth oriented and this is the hotbed of youthful creativity, especially with the newly opened Fashion City which is more accessible than the topmost floor that used to be a carpark but is now a warren of small, Japanese-like shops. Fashion City is a similar, bigger version.

Sungai Wang, despite its proximity to Low Yat Plaza which is computer heaven, is also a major computer and IT haven. A floor above the fashion shops is a technophile's dream as you can browse for the latest computers and gadgets without the heaving crowd at Low Yat. I love body contact but not the sort which may involve pick pocketing and body odours.

Sungai Wang Plaza's 35th birthday featured the designs of 35 designers using 35 models including Wilson Tan, Stylo's Model of the Year 2012 and in collaboration with MODA, the Malaysian Official Designers' Association.

MODA's president Gillian Hung looked stunning in a Sunny San (she seems to wear Sonny San most of the time and he was not even there at the show!) as she welcomed her guests.

The 35 designers were, in alphabetical order so I won't be accused of favouritism; Alvin Tay, Andy Bandy, Ashley Wong for Kapas, Beatrice Looi, Bill Keith, Carven Ong, Daniel Cho, Dennis Lee, Dominique Chan, Eric Choong, Gilbert Ng, Hideaki Lim, Jendela KL, Joe Chia, Jonathan Cheng, Justin Yap, Karl Ng, Keith Kee, Kenneth Hoong, Key Ng, Khoon Hooi, Leslie Variante, Lester Wong, Melinda Looi, Michael Ong, Nurita Harith, Nazleen Noor, Oscar Ng, Richard Tsen, Sonny San, Terrenz Venie Tee, Villiam Ooi, William Liew and Zang Toi.

Our designers are a busy bunch as many did not turn up to accompany their models on the red carpet and on stage for the photo-call.

KK Lim, the hardworking Senior Manager of Promotions and Public Relations said, "The Runway 35 Designers' Gala Show was to promote local design talents and the designers showed mostly glam wear and couture as each designer was allowed only 1 outfit due to lack of time. So the outfit, be it for man or woman, was the signature piece. Bill Keith for instance, showed his feathered gown that premiered at the recent Stylo fashion week when he won Designer of the Year award whereas Wilson Tan, who won Model of the Year wore William Liew tonight. We also had Stylo's Female Model of the Year and winner of Stylo's Model Search."

Long live Sungai Wang Plaza, a veritable goldmine and moneymaking machine and I shall be here to celebrate your 70th birthday!

Miss Chinese Cosmos International Carrie Lee who won the international title in 2004 is now expecting her first baby tomorrow! Yes, she is so heavily pregnant yet decided to attend the show! Good showing my beauty queen! She will be checking into the maternity ward tomorrow!

I made sure she was wearing flatties!

I was hoping Carrie Lee would go into labour and deliver her baby in the concourse of Sungai Wang Plaza there and there but to my disappointment, she refused to do so.

In Hideaki Lim outfit, I must get one set! I am such a shining personality so this suits me to a tee!
