They made millions during the last 3 decades from Vision Four though Dato Steve Day was a gungho helicopter pilot in his 20s. Though a mat salleh, Dato Steve Day can be the poster boy of 'Malaysia Bolih' concept as he chose Malaysia over Singapore to open his business 30 years ago!
Despite the roller-coaster nature of business, he and wifey worked hard and of course this is Malaysia so anyone can succeed!
Vision Four is a prime example of how an upstart on a shoestring budget can thrive and prosper in Malaysia and bloom into a multi-million ringgt business!
"And you can have fun while doing so!" beams Dato Steve Day. "We toiled and were even stopped in 1994 but we bounced back. Many TV stations like Metro etc came and went. Vision Four sells inhouse movies and channels to hotels and when the Internet came, some wrote us off but here we are, still going strong! Like all good businesses, we adapt to the changing times."
Like Bob Dylan says, "The times, they are a-changing" and the Days are always spot on in their timing! MIGF (Malaysia International Gourmet Festival) is a delicious example!
The invite said 'Come Dressed Crazy' but as I came straight from The Banjaran Hotspring Retreat in Tambun, Ipoh, Perak, I was in my usual glam gear. Many think I dress crazy 24/7 anyway, so I passed muster.
"For tonight's party, I asked Datin Su if she could be broadminded enough to get me a hot chick to accompany me and she said 'Sure, I get one for you' so here I am with Florence the flamingo."
At the entrance of 28, Jalan Liku, huge, glowing balls emblazoned with the legend 'Vision Four 30th Anniversary' reminded guests what the party was all about.
The host with most and smiley wifey were on sentry duty welcoming guests. I did not recognise Dato Steve Day as Charlie Chaplin and Datin Su Day as some witch from Harry Potter movies but since they looked so bossy I assumed they had to be the bosses.
Well, it was the mother of all fancy dress balls as many came in colourful, mad and wacky costumes and the staff of Vision Four were similarly decked in their favorite characters.
Tunku Shahabuddin Tunku Besar Burhanuddin wore a white wig and gown so he must be Professor Dumbledore or maybe not. Bryan wore 2 teddy bears at each foot and both are godfathers to Dato Steve Day and Datin Su Day's 2 sons.
The effervescent Tunku Shahabuddin said, "In 1986 I gate crashed Steve's party by climbing a tree to scale his walls. Su Day screamed when she saw me as she thought I was a burglar. I must have made a good impression as 3 years later Dato Steve Day invited me to be Chairman of Vision Four of which I am very honoured."
Naturally the 700 or 800 guests (they did come and go) did not expect Dato Steve Day to saunter into the cavernous hall of Vision Four HQ in batek shirt or business suit or even as Charlie Chaplin since we already saw him in that outfit at the entrance.
We were not disappointed.
Dato Steve Day entered the hall as a guy riding a flirty flamingo named Florence!
After the applause, he thanked his wife Datin Su Wai Fun and his staff. "When I started, my wife and I had a desk each. An Indian guy who couldn't speak English properly walked into my office by mistake and asked if I was looking for an office boy. I said OK and today, 30 years later, Rajan is the second longest staff after my wife."
Put in another way, Rajan is the longest, non-sexual staff of Dato Steve Day!
He then gave awards to all long-serving staff. A cake was lit and blown and the party begun in earnest as by then everyone had filled their tummies to the Plimsoll Line and were mingling and tingling and clinking their glasses.
The food was world class hawker food. Of course the makan had to be good as Dato Steve Day is founder of Malaysia International Gourmet Festival (MIGF) and Datin Su Day is a Cordon Bleu chef!
Everyone received a teddy bear on the way out so they can remember a wild, wacky and wonderful night.
