THE KRONENBOURG 1664 L'APERITIF FASHION GRAND FINALE 2013 WAS A MASSIVE SUCCESS AS 9 FINALISTS SKETCHED, PATTERNED, CUT, SEWN, STITCHED AND SCISSORED TO WIN THE COVETED, PRESTIGIOUS, PRECIOUS AND PRICEY PRIZE OF A 3 MONTH INTERNSHIP WITH LEADING BRITISH DESIGNER NICOLAS GEORGIOU WHO IS NOT ENGLISH BY THE WAY BUT GREEK AND BASED IN ATHENS.

The winner Ellie Lim Mei Li will however intern with Nicolas Georgiou in London since Kuala Lumpur is more fashion savvy than the Greek capital and anyway Greece is on its last financial legs and luxury fashion is really not top priority. He is currently tasked with revitalising Ossie Clarke which sells in Debenham's.

Nicolas Georgiou graduated from the ultra prestigious Central St Martin's School of Art and Design in 1992 and interned in Paris with Christian Lacroix and Balenciaga.

Since Kronenbourg 1664 is France's leading fashion beer and the choice of fashionistas everywhere, it begs the question why Ellie Lim was not sent to Paris. London is one of the Top 3 Fashion Capitals which include Paris and New York though in Asia it is Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

With the tri-coloured rosettes and the colours of the French flag monopolising the decor and a huge Eiffel Tower smack inside Majestic's Ballroom, the effect was tres chic. The dress code was 'French Chic' though Datin Winnie Loo was the only one who looked the part with her Chanel suit.

Everything was ala mode French except the prize which was cool Britannia! Of course if this was the Marmite or Guinness (which is more Irish by the way) contest, then London made sense.

Indeed the Managing Director of Carlsberg Malaysia which produces Kronenbourg 1664 declared "Staying true to its brand personality of French culture, lifestyle and allure, Kronenbourg aspires to develop the local booming fashion scene." Personally I find it tough to envelope myself with French culture in London but then, I am not paying Ellie Lim's airfare, accommodation, food and living expenses in London or Paris.

From what I could gather, London was chosen because "it is a fashion capital" (lame excuse since Paris Fashion Week is more authoritative) but mostly because of Datuk Professor Jimmy Choo who recommended the Greek Nicolas Georgiou. I would have thought Datuk Jimmy Choo also has plenty of designer friends in Paris. As some wags giggled, "Why build Eiffel Tower inside Majestic's ballroom when the winner was going to see Tower of London? Why not install Big Ben or Tower Bridge?"

But the winner Ellie Lim was not complaining so neither should we though this amusing, perplexing conundrum was on everyone's mind. Then again, in true Gallic fashion, it is a paradox so beloved of French culture!

The night also belonged to fashion icon Gillian Hung who mentored the 9 finalists for the last 7 months and looked ravishing as per usual. She wore a ruffled pirate shirt reminiscent of Dura Duran and tight black pants and thigh high boots. Her cleavage was quite magnificent I must admit although it is against my religion to stare and examine boobs, breasts and bosoms.

The judges were famous designers Keith Kee and Khoon Hooi, Rubin Khoo of August Men, Mindy Teh of Marie Claire and Juliette Yap of Carlsberg Malaysia.

I was disappointed my dear friend Tammy, wife of Henrik Andersen could not attend as her child was ailing. Her name was on the chair next to the MD of Carlsberg/Kronenbourg 1664. Grinned Andersen, "My substitute is Pearl Lai from Carlsberg."

I sniffed, "Poor choice,"

Laughed Henrik Andersen, "Well, I suppose it might not go down too well if I had a supermodel next to me."

True, but he could have invited me to sit next to him in lieu of Mrs Tammy Andersen.
