Sometimes called 'Backpackers' Ghetto', Khaosan Road is world famous for its hippy and bohemian ambiance though some say it is a massive tourist trap since Khao San seems to be filled with farang---that is 'foreigners' in Thai and 'Mat Salleh' in Malay.

Young and poor Westerners love staying in Khao San road for its gritty, downmarket ambiance which can be quite fun too! There are no pretensions here though there are plenty of pretentious Louis Vuittons which are of course as fake as some of the impressive boobs of the go-go girls.

Khao San road epitomises the backpacker culture and everyone makes friends easily as they exchange and recommend places and faces to visit. The farang population is very transient as Khao San road is a major hub of travel as coaches leave here daily nonstop to all major and minor tourist destinations in Thailand.

Cheap travel agents offer trips to Indo China and Malaysia and beyond. Rent is low which explains the prices and businesses make profits in bulk transactions.

There are plenty of souvenirs and low-priced, amazingly trendy clothes and you really get value for money. Traders all speak English so communication is a breeze.

Food and massage are plentiful and cheap. So are second hand goods from clothes to shoes to backpacks and hiking boots.

I really enjoyed myself wandering and wondering around!
