Philippe Cousteau’s Rolex Sea-Dweller Sells for $183,750 at Antiquorum Auction

Antiquorum’s successful fall auction of “Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces” held on September 30th at The Hoyt Building in New York totaled a remarkable $3,679, 437. Spirited international participation came from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland as well as the United States.  Competitive bidding for the outstanding collection of 229 timepieces offered resulted in 80% sold by lot and 115% sold by value.

The top lot of the auction was the exceptional Vacheron Constantin set of four “Metiers D’Art” Masks [lot 223]. The exquisite set of wristwatches with “Mask” dials day and date caught the attention of the global collector community and sold for $603,750 to a Chinese collector.

Underscoring the sale was the fierce competition for Philippe Cousteau’s Rolex Sea-Dweller Ref. 1665 [lot 199].  Excitement over this rare and important timepiece has been mounting since Antiquorum announced it would be offered for sale. Not only is it the one of the earliest known Sea-Dweller’s but it also has the added distinction of being formerly owned and worn by famed filmmaker and oceanographer, Philippe Cousteau, the son of the legendary Jacques Cousteau. After a very heated battle between bidders, the highly sought-after timepiece sold for an impressive $183,750.

“We are delighted by the spectacular outcome for Philippe Cousteau’s early Rolex Sea-Dweller in our September sale,” said Evan Zimmermann, President & CEO of Antiquorum. “As demonstrated by today’s auction, collectors continue to zealously bid on rare timepieces with important provenance.”

Rare Patek Philippe timepieces achieved important results. The Patek Philippe Ref. 3979 Minute Repeater with Possibly Unique Breguet Dial [lot 117] sold for a noteworthy $351,750. Moreover, both examples of the Ref. 5004 were coveted by collectors; the pink gold example [lot 115] achieved $219,750 while the platinum version with diamond indexes [lot 116] was acquired for $231,750.

Other exceptional vintage examples from Rolex also obtained outstanding results at Antiquorum’s September sale. The Rolex Ref. 6263 Cosmograph with Tropical Dial in Steel [lot 86], brought $ 87,500, against a pre-auction estimate of $30,000 – 50,000; while the Rolex Ref. 6264  Daytona in Yellow Gold [lot 89] sold for $81,250, twice its low estimate.

The outstanding collection of A. Lange and Söhne timepieces from the property of a private American collector stirred tremendous excitement from collectors across the globe. Each of the 14 timepieces sold above its pre-auction estimate for a combined total of $476,875.

“We are very pleased with our first auction of the season,” said Saori Omura, Watch Director of Antiquorum USA. “ We are particularly thrilled with the outstanding results for the private collection of exceptional timepieces from A. Lange and Söhne which elicited great enthusiasm from collectors worldwide.”

Omega was well represented in the sale with the Omega Speedmaster with Tropical Dial in Steel [lot 84].  The rare chronograph attained $28,750, over three times its high estimate.

Finally, the J. Ullmann & Co. Chinese Market Carillon Grand Sonnerie Minute Repeating Hunting Cased Pocket Watch [lot 70],   was in great demand at the auction.  Phone and internet bidders aggressively competed for the pearl-set and enamel trip minute-repeating pocket watch which ultimately sold for $65,000, over ten times its estimate.

Antiquorum looks forward to its upcoming auction on October 26 in Hong Kong which will include an important collection of modern timepieces from the property of an Italian collector.
