IKAL MAYANG FESTCON 2015:
A GATHERING OF 50 ROLE MODELS & 500 YOUTHS
Ikal Mayang FestCon 2015, an event that brought together more than 50 role
models model and 500 youths was officially launched by the Minister of Women,
Family and Community Development - Dato' Sri Rohani Abdul Karim in Quill City
Mall, Kuala Lumpur on 8 March 2015.
IKAL MAYANG which begins as an
initiative in conjunction with the International Women's Day in 2013, is now
expanding into a storytelling movement that includes the community.
Through this "Role Model"
programme, Ikal Mayang FestCon 2015 gathers as many as 50 role models together
with 500 youths from the urban poor community (PPR) as well as students from
the public and private universities.
It aims to provide support and inspiring
conversations in order to guide them to achieve their own dreams.
Among the
participants of this programme includes artists, celebrities, prominent
entreprenuers such as Hans Issac, Mano Maniam, Azura Zainal, Nadia Aqilah, Nam
Ron, Niki Cheong, Juwita Suwito, Deborah Henry, Vince Chong, Sasha Saidin dan
many more.
This session aims to open up opportunities for the youth so that
their stories will be heard by someone who is already successful or well-known
in their respective fields. Storytelling is one of the tools of empowerment
that affect one’s standpoint.
In addition to that, other on-going
programmes include #SAMASAMABercerita where the public can meet up with their favouritie
celebrities like Adibah Noor, Vanidah Imran, Elaine Daly, Ida Nerina many more
to hear them telling stories.
Ikal
Mayang FestCon 2015 also features 18 short films this year, and with the theme
“SIMILARITIES", it gathers female and male directors to raise women's
share of voice in the mainstream media. And they are:

ABOUT IKAL MAYANG
Inspired by the Malay saying, ‘rambut sama hitam, hati
lain-lain’, Ikal Mayang refers to the long black wavy hair which is also the
jewel crown for every female.
On a bigger perspective, it is a storytelling
movement that wants to highlight the importance of storytelling and to be heard
while improving women’s share of voice, particularly in the mainstream media.
By using simple
and popular culture such as short films - the Ikal Mayang programmes uses short
films as a tool to create conversations and discussions about issue faced by
society and highlight the unique stories which can also related to every human
being.
In
2013, under the theme “Telling Women Stories”, Ikal Mayang introduces female
directors like Susan Lankester, Dira Abu Zahar, Nanu Baharudin, Elaine Daly,
Carmen Soo, Sofia Jane, Vanidah Imran, Fauziah Nawi, Shamaine Othman, Aida
Fitri Buyong, Sharifah Amani, Mislina Mustaffa, Junad M Nor, Melissa Saila and
Ida Nerina who have directed 15 short films (duration of 12 minutes each).
In
2014 with ‘Unspoken Truths’, Ikal Mayang introduces the 2 minutes format and
features 2 new director from a public submission and they are Nora Nabila and
Elza Irdalynna together with 8 invited directors such as Ineza Roussille, Eja,
Deborah Henry, Sharyn Shufiyan, Melissa Indot, Leia Surin Aljoffery, Soefira
Jaafar and Junad M Nor.
An anthology of 6 countries have gathered the South
East Asia’s best female directors such as Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba
(Malaysia), Nia Dinata (Indonesia), Shireen Seno (Filipina), A. D. Chan
(Singapura), Niramon Ross (Thailand) dan Siti Kamaluddin (Brunei).
ABOUT WOMEN:girls
WOMEN:girls
is a not-for-profit organisation that does empowerment programmes for women and
girls through role-modelling.
It is founded in 2011 as an initiative under
Kakiseni where WOMEN:100 was launched to showcase 100 hours of performing arts
(which includes music, theatre, workshops etc) in celebration of the centennial
anniversary of International Women's Day.
Its first on-ground campaign, Inspire
Now won the Campaign of the Year award at the Malaysia PR Awards in early 2012.
Officially registered as a not-for-profit organisation in 2013 under the

WOMEN:girls launched Ikal Mayang, a storytelling movement
to increase the share of women's voice and Power Lunch Series, a networking
luncheon for female leaders to advance other women to the top of the corporate
chain.
Its inaugural Power Lunch Series was selected as one of the satellite
events for the 4th Global Entrepreneurship Summit hosted in Kuala Lumpur in
October 2013. WOMEN:girls also successfully organised the highly commended
TEDxKLwomen talks in 2012 and 2013, with the third in the pipeline for May
2015.
