‘Aspiring New Zealand’ Photo Collection in celebration of 60 years of friendship between Malaysia and New Zealand

On 25 April 2017, Minister of Youth and Sports YB Khairy Jamaluddin, and New Zealand High Commissioner to Malaysia H.E. Dr John Subritzky launched the Aspiring New Zealand photo collection at Bangsar Shopping Centre in celebration of 60 years relations between Malaysia and New Zealand.

Curated by internationally renowned Malaysian photographer, Jeffry Lim, Aspiring New Zealand features over 50 large-size images of New Zealand’s landscapes from an aerial perspective rarely seen by the public. The series was inspired by Jeffry’s travels around the country with his family in 2016.

“As we celebrate 60 years of friendship, we can reflect on the important role tourism has played and focus on how it will continue to build our partnership in the future,” said H.E. Dr John Subritzky.

“Over 53,000 Malaysians visited New Zealand in the year ending at February 2017, which is over a 52% increase from the year before. Malaysia is also a popular destination for New Zealanders travelling in South East Asia or on their way to other parts of Asia or Europe,” he added.

The photo collection was part of a weeklong programme of events celebrating creativity and innovation. Visitors of all ages got to immerse themselves in virtual and augmented reality experiences. Photography enthusiasts had the opportunity to learn from Jeffry firsthand during his exclusive photography sessions. All activities were free for the public.

“It’s great to see Jeffry representing Malaysia on the world stage. His photos have previously been featured in National Geographic and, more recently, two photos from his Aspiring New Zealand collection won prestigious awards at the International Photography Awards (IPA) in New York,” said Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who returned from a visit to New Zealand earlier this month.

The visit was by invitation from the New Zealand Prime Minister under the Prime Minister’s Fellowship Programme for ASEAN. Minister Khairy met with Prime Minister Rt Hon. Bill English, Foreign Minister Hon Murray McCully, Youth Minister Hon Nikki Kay and Sports Minister Dr Jonathan Coleman.

About Aspiring New Zealand Photo Exhibition

The 'Aspiring New Zealand' photo exhibition showcases New Zealand’s spectacular winter landscapes, taken by air in a collection of over 50 large-size photos (some photos up to 60-inch each). It is inspired by the Photographer’s journey as he discovers the abundance beauty of the sea, air and land of New Zealand’s majestic mountains, fascinating geographical terrains, stunning aerial views and colours of topographies that are unique, pristine and rarely seen by the public.

This series of work, taken by Malaysian Photographer Jeffry Lim, has recently been awarded the International Photography Award (IPA) 2016 for the category of Fine Art, Landscapes and Aerial Shoot. The exhibition is also supported by the New Zealand High Commission in Kuala Lumpur as part of its celebration of 60 years of friendship between New Zealand and Malaysia.
