LANDSCAPES AND MEMORIES | PAINTINGS OF DORSET
AND BEYOND | NICHOLAS HELY HUTCHINSON
Friday 6th to Saturday 21st November 2020
Dorset is very fortunate in having one of the county’s most accomplished landscape artists exhibiting at The Jerram Gallery, Half Moon Street, Sherborne, Dorset DT9 3LN this autumn.
From Friday6th to Saturday 21st November the gallery is holding an exhibition entitled Landscapes and Memories | Paintings of Dorset and Beyond by Nicholas Hely Hutchinson.
This is his first exhibition in his home county having previously only held exhibitions in London and abroad. Prices range from £1,900 to £12,000.
There will be 35 paintings in the show of views painted mainly in Dorset, capturing the atmosphere of the changing seasons, autumn into winter, followed by spring going through to the summer.
With the weather constantly changing, the atmosphere of the landscape shifts through the seasons and by capturing this, his paintings produce a kind of delicacy and elegance.
Nicholas engages the beauty of the county in all its splendour and his love of Dorset shines through his work.
Nicholas portrays on canvas that touch of magic that makes his paintings so identifiable. His style stems from the romantic painters of the 19th century resulting in the soft flowing form that his paintings take.
As a student he was taught “if you are an artist….you will think about it all of the time” and he reiterates this point “when I am not painting in my studio, I am always thinking of painting and looking at things while I am driving about or walking, be it a long straight sunlit road, lined with telegraph poles and a sparrow hawk slips over the hedge…………..these are possible elements for a picture. I suppose it is as much part of the creative process as actually painting in the studio”.
Nicholas has lived near Blandford for the last 25 years where he has a studio. His daily routine is to take a sketch book and pencils when out walking where he will do rough drawings and then back in the studio he will work it into a more intricate drawing before starting on the canvas.
Commenting on his studio Hely Hutchinson says, “My studio looks like a scene of chaos to any casual visitor. Paintings are everywhere, canvases hanging on nails, or leaning against walls and most of the flat surfaces are covered with smaller paintings. There are tubes of paint, brushes and old palletes strewn about, and always the smell of oil painting and turps!”
Born in 1955, Nicholas Hely Hutchinson studied at St Martins School of Art. His first one-man show in London was in 1984 and since then he has exhibited constantly in London, Dublin and Hong Kong.
To find out more about his work an excellent 20 minute film entitled ‘Nicholas Hely Hutchinson – Artist in a Landscape is well worth watching. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDEL6HzhQGc&fTHE JERRAM GALLERY
