“Glorious China, Auspicious Macau – Wang Kaifang’s Gold Brick Exhibition”
A Prosperous Start to Chinese New Year!

The one-stop luxury complex, One Central Macau, and MGM MACAU jointly present an auspicious exhibition featuring the work of one of China’s most revered cross-disciplinary contemporary artists

To welcome the Year of the Snake, One Central Macau and MGM MACAU, the premier integrated facility for luxury shopping, dining, hospitality and entertainment,  will jointly present “Glorious China, Auspicious Macau – Wang Kaifang’s Gold Brick Exhibition”, created by one of China’s most famous artists, Wang Kaifang.

Located in the prime waterfront area of Macau peninsula, One Central Macau and MGM MACAU, are equally committed to bringing world-class art to Macau, encourage cultural exchange and contribute to elevating Macau’s art scene to an international level.

As one of China’s most celebrated contemporary artists, Wang’s success has ranged from architecture, gardening, and landscaping, to sculpture, interiors, and graphics. He has completed over 300 works of art, including a commissioned piece for China’s space development program, entitled “Crystal Cockroach”, that travelled with the “Shenzhou 8” spacecraft — a first for Chinese contemporary art. Wang has also received global recognition, through awards such as the “Asia Pin-up Design Awards” Gold Prize and the Interior Design Cover Figure of the Year.

The exhibition, which has never been shown outside Mainland China until now, takes place from February 7, 2013 until April 2, 2013, and will be staged at various locations throughout One Central Macau and MGM MACAU. Wang has produced 12 gold bricks for the upcoming Macau installation — each piece, the tallest of which is a lofty 2.5 meters, has a different story and rationale, serving as a bridge between the audience and the artist.

Explaining the concept, Wang says the bricks represent humanity, with each taking on a different fate and role. Gold is superior to any other earthly metal; it exudes a warm energy with an eternal glow. In Chinese culture, gold is also the prime element and represents authority and prosperity. Based on these philosophies, Wang has combined gold and bricks to create the “Gold Brick” series.

Wang adds, “The Bricks also carry a special message; that is, to create an auspicious and blooming ambience in Macau during the Chinese New Year. Embodying the diversity, as well as the prosperous and ambitious spirits of Macau, the series of works also aims to spread happiness and positive energy, while leaving the viewer with a unique and glorious memory of Macau.”

To create the Gold Brick, he used 24-carat gold foil in a series of unique techniques, such as sensory conversion, holoscan, 3D printing and fine casting – a global pioneering approach in his field.

Guests visiting the “Glorious China, Auspicious Macau – Wang Kaifang’s Gold Brick Exhibition”, during the Chinese New Year, can also take advantage of the celebratory events and promotions that will be held at both One Central Macau and MGM MACAU. A daily lucky draw will run from February 10, 2013 to February 24, 2013, and a total of thirty miniature gold bricks, worth over MOP1 million, will be given away as prizes. Guests who spend MOP10,000 or above, within a day, at One Central Macau or MGM MACAU, will be eligible to receive one lucky draw ticket. There will be two lucky winners per day, and each will be awarded one miniature gold brick worth MOP38,800.

Also, a traditional Chinese handicrafts market will be set up at Grande Praça, MGM MACAU, from February 4, 2013 to February 24, 2013 — activities will include paper-cut art, dough figurine-making, candy-blowing, and hand-pull dragon beard candy-making. Last but not least, a Chinese New Year-themed buffet will be served at Rossio Restaurant, pastries and puddings will be available at MGM Pâtisserie, and the Imperial Court and Grand Imperial Court will host seasonal recommendations from the chefs.
