The book launch of 'Mr Monty's Treat' written by Madame Gail Featherstone, wife of the British High Commissioner His Excellency Mr Simon Featherstone on 26 April 2014 was a historic occasion on several fronts.
First, it coincided with the State Banquet hosted by the Government of Malaysia for President Barack Hussein Obama (the first American president to have a Muslim name) at Istana Negara.
Second, it was the first official visit of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tuanku Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah to the British High Commissioner residence.
Third, it was the last big, official function hosted by the British High Commissioner as he will sadly be leaving Malaysia soon.
It was a very poignant and moving evening, filled with laughter, nolstagia, camaderie and a tinge of sadness.
His Excellency Mr Simon Featherstone said in his welcome speech, "I must thank you for rejecting the invitation to the State Banquet in honour of Mr Barack Obama, president of the United States of America to be with us here tonight. It means so much to me that you all declined dinner with President Obama to attend the book launch of my wife!
"It takes 48 years for an American president to visit Malaysia so it is not our fault the State Banquet coincided with this book launch which was planned many months ago.
"Thank you for coming as tonight is the last big function hosted by me and Gail. As some may know, I have been battling an illness for the last 7 months and will return soon to United Kingdom for further treatment. However I have the utmost respect for the Malaysian medical service and facilities."
Her Royal Highness Tuanku Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah said in her speech, "I am pleased to be Royal Patron for Malaysia's first paediatric palliative care programme launched last year by Health Minister Dato Sri Liong Tiong Lai during the visit of HRH the Duke and HRH the Duchess of Cambridge.
"Holistic support or palliative care is holistic support for sufferers of life-limiting illnesses. Hospis Malaysia currently has 400 patients and their families at any one toime. Fear and taboo sometimes prevent us from seeing the value of this type of care which is focused on giving patients and their families the best possible quality of life for as long as possible.
"I thank Gail Feathrstone for writing this little book 'Mr Monty's Treat' and giving all proceeds from the sale of the book and paintings by Molly Jackson to Hospis Malaysia.
"Most patients are in constant pain and even if we can only bring a few hours of joy into their lives, it is important we should do this."
Well said, your Royal Highness!
To me, we should thank God, Buddha and Jesus for not being a patient of any hospices where patients go literally to die. It is a crude way of saying it but let us not play with pretty words. A hospis is where patients go to die whereas a hospital is where you go to get cured!
Having said this, it is also true the average stay for most in a hospis is 12 to 14 days after which the patients return home feeling better! So where there is life, there is hope!
When I was down with flu, fever and cough all of last week, I was alone in bed and wondering if I was on my deathbed though I know many others are suffering infinitely more than me. I feared I had dengue or MERS Cov but due to Buddha's intervention and Jesus's intercession, it was not life threatening and I recovered in time to attend Gail Featherstone's book launch.
So if we are able to help, we must do so as you never know, I or you might end up in a hospis later in our life! Who dares predict we will all live happily ever after like in fairy tales?
Speeches were also made by Mr Yee who is the father of a 17 year old suffering from a rare disease for which there is no cure. Yee said, "We prayed for a child so when we got one, we were so happy. But at aged 7, he started falling sick and has been in a hospis so long he is now considered a senior there. We also have a second child and sometimes we feel guilty as we spend so much time on the first child. The lives of my wife and myself constantly revolve around my first son and it is a fulltime job."
Many guests tried to hold back their tears and HRH Princess Tuanku Raja Zarith Sofiah listened so intently with such a compassionate expression I felt so honoured to be in the same room as her.
Dr Ednin Hamzah, CEO and Medical Director of Hospis Malaysia in Taman Seri Bahtera, Cheras, also spoke on the importance of palliative care.
Baroness Illora Finley, professor of palliative care of Cardiff University thanked the British High Commissioner on doing such a great job on behalf of the British Government and noted his splendid performance during his Swiss tenure.
The last speech was by the author Gail Featherstone who thanked everyone and her voice shook and quavered when she thanked 'my loving husband Simon'.
Well, on behalf of Malaysia, I wish His Excellency a speedy recovery so he can come back to KL!
2 original paintings by Scottish artist Molly Jackson sold for RM 5,000 each while the third went for RM 10,000.
Another highlight was a slice of the wedding cake given to Nikesh Mehtu from British High Commission by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2012 during their visit to Malaysia. Nikesh had helped the organising of the Cambridges's tour so he was the lucky recipient of the historic wedding cake. He had kindly donated this slice of cake for the fund-raising!
The bid started at RM 500 and was won by Dato Yeoh Soo Ming, financial director of YTL Group who paid RM 5,000 and refused to let me eat a wee bit! "No one gets to touch the cake!" she insisted.
At RM 5,000 it was very cheap as most slices are in private royal or public collections. Traditionally, such slices of cake are eaten during the couple's first anniversary or christening of their first child.
It is meant to bring good luck and the cake came inside a special blue box with royal insignia, letter and confirmation Buckingham Palace had given its permission for the cake to be sold! So it is not as if Nikesh had sold it for private gain! I of course would never sell or give the cake away but keep it and get buried with it inside my coffin together with my jewels and cash so I can take them with me to heaven.
If you wish to help, 15 employees from British High Commission will accompany Mr Monty on a climb to Mt Kinabalu in Sabah in May. They hope to raise more money for Hospis Malaysia through donations and sponsorships.
Remember to buy Mr Monty's Treat for RM 25 each at MPH bookstores, Hamleys, Debenhams, Cold Storage, Mercato and Jasons Food Hall to improve your karma.
