SUPERMODEL SEARCH MALAYSIA 2019 GRAND FINALE
The Runway Supermodel Search (RUSS)
online reality show, organised annually by Runway Productions by Catwalk Guru
concluded the Malaysian leg of its 2019 competition, at a grand finale held in
conjunction with 1 Utama Shopping Centre’s “Style At One 2019” Fashion Week.
This year’s edition comprised of two modelling branches, namely kids and
adults, and the grand finale, which was emceed by Serena C, saw one female and
one male grand winner named from their respective categories.
During the grand finale, this year’s
finalists were judged on stage in front of a live public audience by
professional judges representing varied fields, and the esteemed panel consists
of RUSS creator and Catwalk Guru - Benjamin Toong, makeup artist and beauty
influencer from Indonesia and Hong Kong - Franky Wu, director of V Magic
Malaysia - Deledda Tan, Ford Model’s Supermodel of the World Malaysia 2009
winner - Kelly Jagan, and also the newly crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2019 -
Shweta Sekhon.
Now in its eight year running, online
applications started back in August 2018, and after a demanding selection
process which included live screenings for shortlisting purposes, called back
contestants were required to brave through and impress at two live public
auditions - the first one at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, in collaboration
with Astro Malaysia; and the second one at 1 Utama Shopping Centre earlier this
year - before the top 20 finalists for each category can be formed.
From there, and in between lessons
and training sessions on both catwalk as well as photo shoots, all the
finalists have to survive modelling challenges which involved photo shoots,
video shoots, catwalk, and also fitness tests (by Anytime Fitness and 100
Plus), or risk elimination during deliberations.
They were even tested beyond
the scope of their comfort zones by having to become script writers and
directors for their own video commercials, as part of a beauty product
challenge (for V Magic Malaysia). Alas, four underperforming models were
eliminated before the grand finale.
“We can only select the best of the
best to win but that doesn’t mean we only take into account their physical
appearances and challenge performances. What’s also important is their work
attitude and discipline as none of the judges, nor anyone else in the modelling
industry for that matter, would want to work with a model who possesses all the
outer attributes but is difficult to work with,” shared Toong, regarding the
gravity of the judges’ collective decision.
By the end of the exciting and long
awaited afternoon, multiple subsidiary awards were given out for outstanding
performances by finalists throughout the competition, and the winners were
ultimately crowned as per the following listing:

Each winner and award recipient
walked away with their very own personalised RUSS trophies, along with various
prizes and products from sponsors. For the adults category, both the winners as
well as their runners up also received the honour of representing Malaysia in
the upcoming international leg of the RUSS competition, namely the Runway
Supermodel Search World 2019 which is slated to take place later this year in
August 2019, in which they will be going up against models from nine other
countries for model champion glory.
