KUALA LUMPUR FASHION WEEKEND 2015
The
fifth annual KL Fashion Weekend 2015 (KLFWend) kicked off eight days of fashion with an array of
spectacular runway shows featuring collections of top and emerging local and
international designers.
KLFWend is supported by Tourism Malaysia and organised in
conjunction with 1Malaysia Year-End Sale 2015 (1MYES).
It aims to promote
the Government’s initiative to make Malaysia a vibrant Duty Free shopping
destination, attract new luxury and lifestyle brands and turn Malaysia into a
leading retail distribution hub within the region under the Tourism NKEA Entry Point Project
#1: Malaysia, Duty Free Destination (EPP#1: Duty Free Malaysia).
What started out as a retail event first introduced in 2011, KLFWend
has evolved to include designer presentations called Kuala Lumpur
Alta Moda presentations and New Generation Fashion Awards.
KL Alta Moda, which means ‘high fashion’ in
Italian, aims to present a platform for the interaction between the
couturiers/leading fashion designers/labels and the higher echelon of the
Malaysian society while the New Generation Fashion Awards is a competition organised to identify new fashion talents who possess the potential to
become innovative fashion industry players of the future.
It is open to
Certificate/Diploma and Degree graduates of leading design and fashion schools.
The theme for this year’s event revolved on local heritage textiles like batik, songket and limar. These are highlighted through the works of local designers/labels like Fatimah Chik (one of Malaysia’s most renowned batik authorities), Ruzz Gahara,
Layar Sutra by Betty Banafe, Kraftangan and Karyaneka.
“We are trying to invigorate
and elevate our local fashion and textile industry, especially our heritage textiles like Batik, Songket, Tenun and Limar, through partnership programmes between textile producers and
designers. Our first success is the collaboration between Kraftangan Malaysia
and Dame Zandra Rhodes DBE.
Our participants this year e.g. Fatimah Chik and
Ruzz Gahara, who bring unique perspective and designs to their Batik materials are some of the best examples of how the industry can attract international and renowned designers to look
at Malaysia and our local textile producers for the fabrication of their next
Collection” says Dodi, Director of Tradisi Busana PR Sdn Bhd and organiser
of KLFWend.
Dame Zandra Rhodes, under the KL Alta Moda
category is showing a collection specially created for Kraftangan, made from
Malaysian hand-painted silk. The Collection was first showcased at London
Fashion Week SS16 from 18 to 22 September 2015.
Other new and established
designers/labels presenting at KLFWend under KL Alta Moda category are Gene by
Eugene Lim, Eggie Azman, Farah Salleh, Lynda Rahim, Amanda Brown Couture who is
presenting her last showcase in Malaysia before focusing on the International
fashion scene, Suhara Jewel Art, Al Jameela (Muslimah collection) and LORD’s.
This year, under the KL Alta Moda category,
KLFWend will also present Collections by Amato (from Dubai) and Ae’lkemi (from
Australia). Amato is UAE’s first global designer brand that has earned itself
an international cult following – from royalty to international celebrities
including super-model Heidi Klum, singing sensations Katy Perry, Jennifer
Lopez, Nicki Minaj, Shakira, Nicole Scherzinger and Amber Rose.
Ae’lkemi is a Perth based designer, whose
garments are recognised for their signature seductive elegance that represents
feminity. Over the years, Ae’lkemi has become synonymous with high-end fashion
and has been seen on the catwalks of New York, London, Milan and Berlin Fashion
weeks.
The couturier has also become the first Australian to be inducted into
the Asian Couture Federation. KL Fashion Weekend will be Ae’lkemi’s premier
collection show in the region.
The New Generation Fashion Awards, scheduled
for 22 November 2015, was the exclusive stage for graduate students from
some of the country’s leading fashion and design schools to present their
graduating Collections.
“We are thrilled to give these students a platform to
showcase their collections, an avenue for them to show-off their talent for
design and fashion. We hope the experience will leave them feeling enthusiastic
and inspired” said Dodi.
KLFWend also presented 2 Forums;
d Forum1: Up-Close & Personal with Dame
Zandra Rhodes DBE on 16 November 2015.
d Forum 2: Limar on 20 November 2015.
Keeping to the hallmark of all KLFWend events,
guests and media were entertained by classically trained tenors and
sopranos, singing well-loved numbers from the famous operas and musicals at
KLFWend.
