FRUIT CAKES ARE A DIME A DOZEN AS YOU CAN BUY THEM AT ANY  SUPERMARKET OR CAKE SHOP. EVEN THEN THEY ARE NEVER CHEAP DUE TO THE CONTENTS OF FRUITS ETC. THE CHEAPEST ARE AROUND RM 6 WHILE SOME SELL FOR RM 15 EACH.

I am fond of fruit cakes so have tried most local ones including those at 5 star hotels since I am also 5 star. But all are dry and flaky and are quite hard to eat. So while they are edible there is nothing to write home about!

I was shocked at the price of Buckingham fruit cake price of RM 250 for 700-gram but since they are imported 100% from England and enjoyed by Queen Elizabeth II, I thought if it is good enough for Her Majesty it should also be good enough for me.

The pretty and classy box is a hint of what is inside. 

The built-in tab makes opening the lid easy though the lid is located below so you can quickly place entire cake on plate. The cake is surrounded by paper dressing so if you eat it straight with a spoon, the crumbs remain inside and not all over the table.

As you open, a delightful whiff of fine whisky floats outwards and makes your palate tingle. How the cake remains moist remains a secret but can be due to the blend of whiskies from selected distilleries in Scotland. The cake is baked in the tin and vacuum-packed to seal in falvour and freshness. After opening, the cake should be consumed within 14 days not that it has ever lasted that long.

Buckingham fruit cakes cannot keep forever ok? The supermarket varieties last for several years but the one I just ate was produced on 15 July 2016 and will expire on 15 October 2017 so its shelf life is just 15 months. Each cake is clearly labelled with dates of production and even batch code.

Ingredients include sultanas, raisins, currants, orange peel, butter, cherries, treacle, lemon peel, spices and fructose syrup.
