The Glass Slipper Ball was a hoot and superbly presented by STYLO. Hosted by the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism, it was perfect timing as Glass Slipper Ball was a prelude to the 2nd Malaysian International Shoe Festival 2011 which was the following day on 7 April 2011. So we safely assumed there would be plenty of shoes, Cinderella and her Ugly Step-Sisters and we were right! Everyone put their best foot forward that evening and were busy staring and comparing shoes which was considered nice and friendly. After all, it is so declasse and socially uncouth to compare diamonds!
The Minister of Tourism seemed bedazzled by this diamante shoe.
Important feet; left is Dato' Jimmy Choo's shoes which are timelessly classic and blended with the floor, the middle shoes are from Dato' Nancy and I liked Winnie Loo's red, orange and snakeskin shoes.
At the entrance were pedestals, each showing a shoe. Anyone could steal it but no point as how to traipse around town with one only shoe? Little did they realise on the opposite side were similar pedestals containing the other shoe!

Cinderella's carriage.
In the centre was a carriage in the shape of a big, fat, round pumpkin. I thought there would be Cinderella inside, waiting to pop out when the VIP Guest of Honour Dato' Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen arrived. But no, it was strictly for show.
For once, the pixmen were aiming their lenses downwards...at the shoes of the guests rather than their faces. I wore my Joker bi-coloured red and green shoes with curly toes which created a sensation. When I entered the holding room, Dato Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen, Minister of Tourism, squealed and hastily told her guests and members of her entourage not to be afraid as I was harmless and her friend. I was shocked another guest Dato Professor Jimmy Choo (no shoe show is complete without Malaysia's superstar shoemaker!) was late and kept the Minister of Tourism waiting! It was left to PR Queen Dato' Nancy Yeoh to soothe
Of course we begun comparing shoes and I took photos as proof. Later on stage after the show was over, I was taking her photos and asked whose shoes she was wearing. I assumed it would be Jimmy Choo Couture shoes. Like all of us, the Tourism Minister wore the shoes that matched her dress. Sportingly, she removed her shoe to let me see the label. What a surprise----I was half right! The shoes she was wearing was Jimmy Chia which has a shop in Pavilion! Well the Tourism Minister is known for supporting local talents and you do not need to be an international name for her to wear your creations! Kudos for the Minister! I would think a relatively unknown shoe brand like 'Jimmy Chia' needs more support than 'Jimmy Choo' which has 56 boutiques worldwide!

The show started with Angie Ng who won the STYLO Model of the Year 2010 as the long-suffering Cinderella who appeared on stage looking, I must say, extremely healthy, fresh and well-dressed. She as supposed to be coated with cinders, hence her name Cinderella! But she looked too well scrubbed and polished!
I thought Cinderella would be bare footed but she seemed well-shod compared to her ugly step sisters wearing ungainly clogs.
I wish Angie would wear a wig as she has short hair. The real Cinderella would have a fit if she were to see Angie with short cropped hair. Anyway she was deadly sweet as expected but her nasty Ugly Step-sisters stole the show when they appeared looking decidely worse for wear and spinsterish as who would want marry these two old bags. Why, they even pushed poor Cinderella to the floor. How Angie Ng managed to fall without breaking every bone in her legs is a miracle.

She may be down but notice she was still elegant with legs gracefull crossed to avoid me taking photos of her undies.
But the star was Cinderella's evil Stepmother in the form of Edwin Sumun the actor, director and choreographer who played the role with aplomb and was obviously relishing the role.
Quite the modern mum in a caftan is Cinderella's evil stepmumsie.
On the stage was a monstrous red shoe made of red crystals that symbolised Cinderella's glass slipper, the one that fell off her foot at midnight as she was fleeing to her carriage before the vehicle turned into a pumpkin and her driver and footmen became mice. I thought a model (or two!) would emerge from the toe of this gigantic shoe ala the vampire who emerged from the coffin on Interview with the Vampire gala but alas, like Cinderella's carriage, the shoe was for our viewing pleasure only.
Couturier Melvin Lam even brought his own singer Stefano Chen!

Then came the fab fashion show, featuring the designs from Faisol Abdullah, Melvin Lam, Dominique Chan, Carven Ong and Jovian Mandagie. Jovian was the star of the night with his spectacular shoe show. Ok, so Faisol's dresses were clean and simple and Melvim Lam and Carven Ong proved great minds thought alike as they placed shoes on top of the models' heads though feng shui believers would rather jump off Petronas Twin Towers than do this but Jovian leaped off the cliff by placing the insoles on clothes as an integral part of the designs. This involved more effort and skill than placing a shoe on the head so hats off to Jovian.
One model, Fazlun, was encased inside a bird cage but could still walk by lifting the entire cage made of lightweight materials. Another had an exoskeleton shaped like an inverted bowl over her head. The audience almost rose to their feet at the finale when Angie Ng appeared on stage with a voluminous ball gown except it was made of steel but had rollers so Angie needed no physical strength to push it up and down the catwalk. Turning the entire steel gown was impossible so all she did was turn herself 180 degrees and proceeded to walk back with the steel gown in the same position as the rollers simply spurned round! Ingenious! See what I mean below!
This was the ultimate ball gown. Heavy is the head that wears the crown, heavier still the waist that wears this gown!

The 12 finalists in the Ford Models Supermodels Search took turns by appearing on the catwalk dressed in F & F outfits and were told to do their thing and impress the judges and audience. This they did by crawling, slinking and vamping their way from steps to catwalk and back. They also snarled, grimaced, made faces and bared their teeth enroute.
A lavish supper was served.
