MICHAEL MANTZ TOOK WIFE PRINCESS DR BECKY LEOGARDO AND KEE HUA CHEE TO VIEW TAIPEI CITY FROM THE 89TH FLOOR OF 101 BUILDING, THE WORLD'S 4TH TALLEST BUILDING.
Too bad the weather was unbelievably lousy and all we saw were hazy buildings and limited panoramas. Michael Mantz had to pay NT$ 500 (RM 52) per person and as we entered, our photos were taken at NT$ 89 each since we were taking the lift to the 89th floor where the Observatory was located.
Going up 89 floors took only 36 seconds and coming down 45 seconds! And my ears didn't pop and I felt nothing, as if I am inside a lift taking me to the 8th or 9th floor!
Up there we saw a series of posters showing 101 Building under various lighting conditions so everyone posed here for free!
We went to see the damper which is the heart of 101 and all tall towers as this gigantic ball allows the 1,670 feet (509 m) structure to sway when a typhoon hits, absorbing the wind and steadying the building which will then sway maybe 10 feet outwards and then repositions itself again once the hurricane winds are gone!
Getting down was via the 88th floor where we saw the damper again and then were forced to leave via the obligatory, unavoidable and expected souvenir shop. Except this was no ordinary souvenir store selling miniature, battery-powered plastic 101 buildings which light up but the world's highest jewellery store!
And the biggest too since it occupies the entire 88th floor! I have never seen such stunning red, white and cream coloured corals carved into stupendous animals, gods, flowers and jewellery!
