Inspired by the Timeless Legacy of the St. Regis Afternoon Tea Ritual and Oriental Tea Culture, the Limited Edition Jewelry Piece will be available on the Brand’s Retail Site

St. Regis Hotels & Resorts recently launched a limited edition fine jewelry piece designed by Bao Bao Wan, renowned designer and the first St. Regis Connoisseur from China.

The bespoke teapot-shaped pendant with inlaid gemstones was unveiled during an exclusive and signature St. Regis Midnight Supper held at The St. Regis Shanghai Jing’an, and will soon be available for order on the St. Regis online boutique, stregisboutique.com.

The exquisite 18K rose gold teapot represents Bao Bao Wan’s own interpretation of the brand’s iconic St. Regis Afternoon Tea Ritual and features unique brand elements such as the St. Regis monogram, seven inlaid diamonds on its handle as a tribute to the St. Regis matriarch, ‘the’ Mrs Astor’s love for diamonds, and a red ruby on the teapot lid—a nod to the brand’s signature color of King Cole Red.

Initiated by the Duchess of Bedford of Britain dating back to the 18th century, the afternoon tea ritual was particularly appreciated as a heritage by Mrs. Astor. Regarded as the grand dame of New York high society in the late 19th century, Mrs. Astor transformed this legendary social ritual into a private social gathering that was exclusively for socialites and élites.

Being of Chinese descent, Bao Bao Wan has a natural understanding of the juxtaposition of western tea culture and traditional Chinese tea culture, and fully embraces traditional spirits of respect, reunion, gratitude and celebration in her design.

“Every gemstone is a gift from nature, a source of inspiration which I hope to share with everyone through my design,” said Bao Bao Wan. “I was very inspired by the St. Regis Afternoon Tea Ritual, a timeless legacy passed down from Mrs. Astor as the prelude to some of the most legendary social events and hope to convey the brand’s hallmark sense of hospitality through this piece”.

“It was extremely meaningful for us to work with our first ever Chinese St. Regis Connoisseur on a bespoke handcrafted pin to recognize the efforts and devotion extended by our butlers in the Greater China region, which we launched in the end of 2016,” said Bruce Ryde, Vice President, Luxury Brands and Brand Marketing, Asia Pacific, Marriott International.

“To continue our work this year, I’m thrilled that we are once again able to collaborate with Bao Bao Wan, who shares our unwavering commitment to excellence and is able to speak to the passions of our guests while offering an authentic appreciation of the St. Regis legacy”.

Through its unique Connoisseur program, St. Regis has taken special care to partner with ambassadors who share the brand’s commitment to excellence and speak to the passions of its guests, while offering an authentic connection to the St. Regis legacy. Born in Beijing, Bao Bao Wan was the first Chinese debutante to be invited to attend the famed Bal des Debutantes at the Hotel Crillon.

Often traveling around the world in search of a renewed vision for her designs, Ms. Wan Baobao epitomizes today’s St. Regis luminary, inspired by modern glamour and cultural sophistication. Bao Bao Wan describes St. Regis hotels as embodying a home away from home and has found deep inspiration in the intricate detail in each property’s architecture, décor, design, and bespoke services.

Together with other St. Regis Connoisseurs including celebrated polo player Nacho Figueras, fashion designer Jason Wu, and modern jazz icon, Jamie Cullum, Bao Bao Wan now complements an elite group of brand ambassadors who help to further establish St. Regis as an authority in style and design, the arts, philanthropy and sport – all passions of the St. Regis global clientele.

The newly opened St. Regis Shanghai Jing’an, the brand’s ninth property in Greater China which   features the perfect blend of timeless British architecture and historical Chinese cultural elements, hosted the intimate Midnight Supper to launch the new jewelry piece. A longstanding tradition, the Midnight Supper ritual also pays homage to Mrs Astor and her lavish Gilded Age gatherings.

Mrs. Astor had a powerful influence in New York high society with her legendary “The 400” list, which contains the names of the most privileged who were invited to her élite private afternoon teas, soirees, galas, and other social events. St. Regis New York became the epicenter of social gatherings of that time, with the notable St. Regis Midnight Supper becoming a lasting legacy.
