You see strange things at STYLO but this was the strangest---Doreen on crutches!
In case you blinked, here is another look. At first I assumed Doreen was doing a Kee Hua Chee and faking a leg injury (notice she had all the time to paint her toe nails red) and using crutches to get attention but investigations revealed she really hurt her leg, poor dear.

The
Grand Opening of MERCEDES-BENZ STYLO
Fashion Grand Prix KL 2013 themed “Mannequin Fantasies” saw the usual glitz
and glamour with the crème de crème of KL’s high society converging at the
brand new, urban inspired hotel, Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral today. The
much-anticipated week -long festival simultaneously launched the impending Asia
Fashion Week (AFW) & the Rainforest Fashion Initiative (RFI) on the same
night.

Presented by Mercedes-Benz and Starwood Hotels & Resorts
together with STYLO International, the country’s biggest fashion event kicked
off with a fanfare of the best. Debuting top designers, from 7 Asian countries besides
Malaysia namely Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore and
Indonesia, the night was not short of anticipated exhilaration. STYLO’s
trademark deco did not disappoint as it spilled decadent exaggeration from the
entrance to the Grand Ballroom.
The night
commenced with much excitement when guests were greeted by sweeping red drapes
and gleaming chandeliers upon arrival which saw the edgy, clean styles of the
ballroom foyer been transformed into nothing short of a typical STYLO inspired
doll house. Guests were thrilled by the quirky and creative visual interpretation
of its theme and were jolted from their usual tete-a-tete, when they realised
the myriad of mannequins looking down from the balcony above the Grand Ballroom
were actually alive. “Live” mannequins and still mannequins created out of
recycled materials depicting the“Mannequin Fantasties” were a definite treat to
many in the crowd.
The show began with
much mystery and thrill when models strutted not from the usual backstage to
the runway but made an unusual entrance in GRAND style. The show then proceeded
to the ribbon cutting ceremony which was led by Minister of Tourism, YB Datuk
Seri Ng Yen Yen, shoe designer extraordinaire Dato’ Professor Jimmy Choo, together
with partners Mercedes-Benz Malaysia President and CEO, Roland Folger, Stylo
International CEO and President, Dato’ Nancy Yeoh and sponsors President and
CEO of Ireka Properties, Lai Voon Hon, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Managing
Director, Soren Ravn, Visa’s Country Manager for Malaysia, Stuart Tomlinson, GM
of Petronas Motorsports, Anita Azrina, CEO
of Asia Fashion Inc, Timothy Chen, GM of Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral, Paolo
Campillo, Co-Founder of A Cut Above, Winnie Loo, Eric Yeoh from Intraceuticals
and Asean Brand Manager of Shu Uemura, Elaine Too.
The night also witnessed the Mercedes-Benz STYLO
Fashion Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Minister of Tourism, YB Datuk
Seri Ng Yen Yen by Dato’ Professor Jimmy
Choo for her contributions to the country’s fashion industry. Fashion and
Retail Associations heads such as Malaysian Official Designers’ Association
(MODA) represented by Gillian Hung, Bumiputera Designers’ Association (BDA)
represented by Bon Zainal, Young Designers’ Arena (YODA) represented by Baizura
Tazri, Malaysian Footwear Manufacturers Association (MFMA) represented by Tony
Ting and BBKLCC Tourism Association
represented by Joyce Yap were present to bear witness to this momentous
occasion.
President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Roland
Folger quoted during his speech,” As Mercedes-Benz celebrates its 10th
anniversary of the company’s incorporation this year and our partnership with
STYLO in its 6th year, we pledge to continue our commitment to the
promotion of haute couture. We want to elevate the Malaysian fashion
industry internationally not just with our World Fashion Exchange but also the
upcoming Asian Fashion Week & Rainforest Fashion Initiative. We want to put
Malaysia on the Top 10 best fashion weeks’ list soon enough by staying focused on
the future.”
The Asian Fashion Week & Rainforest Fashion Initiative
which will debut in KL later this year is set to be the largest and most
prestigious trade focused event that will subsequently travel around Asia .It is
a business to business (B2B) debut that will see participations from 15 Asian
countries to ensure STYLO stays relevant to the world’s fashion industry.
CEO and President of STYLO International, Dato’ Nancy
Yeoh who wore a stunning updated garbage dress by Bill Keith from STYLO’s debut
at India’s first ever Formula One 2011
in Mumbai and jewels by AFW designer,
Janina Garcia from Philippines, said,
“Fashion Grand Prix 2013 is definitely bigger and better in terms of designs
and ideas. This year we are very excited about launching the Asian Fashion Week
and Rainforest Fashion Initiatives that will showcase a spectacular line up of
Asian designers all under one roof. We have been dabbling with the idea of
wanting to put something that encompasses Asian fashion as one for a long time,
and at the same time to create a fashion event which will rival the best fashion
weeks around the world. Hence the partnership involving STYLO, Mercedes-Benz
and Asian Fashion Inc plus the biggest
names in Asian Fashion Associations in Asia to bring fashion enthusiasts the AFW
& RFI.”
The highlight of the evening was the AFW designers
fashion showcase featuring S Nine from Hong Kong, Sapto Djojokartik
representing Indonesia, Eric Delos Santos from Philippines with Malaysian
representatives Alvin Tay and Justin Yap of MODA, Kashfi Zulkifli of YODA, Amir
Luqman and Ezuwan Ismail of BDA. The line for the opening night was only a
fragment of the AFW designers’ showcase as the presenters promised more
incredible Asian and Malaysian designs to take the stage throughout the week at
the FGP 2013.
Guests also had the opportunity of owning a one of kind
piece by many of the Asian designers presenting throughout Mercedes-Benz STYLO
FGP via the AFW trunk sale held outside the Grand Ballroom. Unique, never
before seen pieces were on sale at great bargains much to the delight of the
guests.
The breath-taking Pop up Art segment mimicking the
rainforest under the Rainforest Fashion Initiative segment was another fanciful
treat when models popped out of fabrics body-painted in the exact same designs.
Mercedes-Benz STYLO Designer of the Year 2010, Edric Ong and Mercedes-Benz
STYLO Designer of the Year 2009, Jendela KL created an amazing fabric with
designs inspired by the multi facets of Malaysia and its rainforest whilst the
body art was created to imitate the fabric by artist Bong.
After the show, guests were led to the after party
room at the Grand Ballroom which was stunningly redecorated as a make believe
giant STYLO doll house. Taking a leaf from the movie “Truman Show”, it was based
on the concept of a room within a room with an inner sanctum as the dance
floor. It was definitely a feast for the eyes with actual mannequins and “live”
mannequins taking centre stage. The doll house is expected to change its
ornamentation every night keeping with the theme of each night.
Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral, Starwood Hotels and Resorts
latest jewel and a member of W is venue host for the entire festival leading up
to the hotel’s grand opening on the night of the Mercedes-Benz STYLO Fashion
Awards later in the week. Aloft is urban-influenced, modern in design and a
social guest experience hotel catered for the new generation of travellers, the
Gen Ys.
STYLO International was
set up to create fringe events to support world class motorsport activities in
the region. Motorsport activities have seen tremendous jump in Asia as it is
the sports of choice for the affluent male; the same way affluent females covert
couture fashion. Hence, the use of fashion as the excuse for this stylish
fringe activity. STYLO is
essentially a Malaysian slang for the word ‘style’. The ‘O’ in STYLO denotes that fashion evolves in a
circle.
