ON 28 NOVEMBER 2013 THE EAGERLY AWAITED LIST OF TOP 10 COUNTRIES TO VISIT IN 2014 WAS RELEASED BY LONELY PLANET, PLANET EARTH'S BEST AND MOST AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE ON GOING PLACES TO SEE THE BEST FACES AND MALAYSIA ROMPED IN AT #10.
This means we made it into the Top 10 list though of course we deserve to be #1 instead of Brazil! Brazil has a bad rep for crime, theft, mugging and murder but it is cleaning up its act since it is hosting the World Cup next year and Malaysia is NOT!
I think the list is chosen based on major events as #2 is Antarctica which is not even a country since no one in their right mind would live in a place where winter is almost 24/7!
But you see, this year marks the centenary of the infamous crossing of the Antarctic byErnest Shackleton which is not all what it is made out to be as The Daily Mail of UK has published a report accusing the hero of cannibalism to survive! Then again, the Brits love to shoot themselves in the right leg to spite the left. And if I was starving to death I would resort to eating my dead comrades too, more so when their flesh would be in excellent condition and not rotting with maggots since the corpses would be frozen!
Third is Scotland which is also not a country as it is a province (the wee laddies will vomit blood when they read this) of England, I mean a state within United Kingdom. It is like saying Kelantan is a nation. Anyway, like I said, Scotland is #3 as Glasgow is hosting the 20th Commonweath Games. I have been to Scotland many times and love it so I shall not gripe any further.
#4 is Sweden which I have visited thrice and also love it so this wonderful state deserves to be number four.
Malawi is #5 and wins because it offers the Big 5---elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo. I saw them all in South Africa but Malawi (often mistaken for Malaysia as the two names appear as one to some Mat Sallehs) is off the beaten track. The buffalo is the wild version which can attack on sight for no reason and not our kerbau in the padi fields grazing grass peacefully.
I disagree with #6 which is Mexico as it is too crime-riddled and one hardly feels safe. As for #7 Seychelles, who wants to fly to God-forsaken Seychelles in some ulu spot in some vast ocean when Malaysia offers better, more beautiful beaches at lower prices and Malaysia is more diverse with more sights and sounds?
#8 Belgium is described as 'underrated gem' and for good reason. I have been there 6 times and prefer la belle France which is similar and far more interesting.
#9 is Macedonia which is only famous because Alexander the Great was born there. Why bother with Macedonia when Greece is nicer, bigger and more historic with Athens and the islands very different from Langkawi, Pangkor Laut and Perhentian! Or even better, Turkey is also nearby! And I love Istanbul to bits! If you are over 30 and have not been to Istanbul you might as well have not lived.
We are #10. But based on my calculations, we should be #3 at the very least, after Brazil and Scotland!
I think it is my divine duty to apply to work at Lonely Planet and compile the 2015 List.
Then again, one of my perverse friends reminded me 2014 is Visit Malaysia Year and maybe that was the reason why we swanned into the list as next year will be another bumper year for us!
Congratulations to our Ministry of Tourism for a job well done! And to Dato Steve Day and Datin Su Day who will be up to their necks organising the 14th Malaysia International Gourmet Festival! What a coincidence---the 14th MIGF for Visit Malaysia Year '14! Did Dato Steve Day have a vision when he started MIGF in 2000?
