DOUBLE WHAMMY OF A PARTY!

Malaysia’s most glamorous jeweller Winnie Sin and her husband Sin Cheang Loong threw an orange-coded double whammy of a party to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary and her 41st birthday on 19 May at Le Meridien.

Owner of Rafflesia Pearl Centre, Mandalay Ruby & Jade and Jewellery Circle, Winnie Sin and her husband Sin Cheang Loong hosted a lavish soiree to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary and her 41st birthday. Held at Meridien’s Sultan Ballroom for 200 guests, the bash was attended by some of Malaysia’s most luminous pillars of society and blingnistas. The wife of the ambassador of Kazakhstan, Mrs Bagila Atamkulov, the ambassador of Uzbeksitan and several Puan Sris headed the VIP list. All wore Rafflesia, Mandalay or Jewellery Circles bling which was expected since all were clients who have become friends over the years.

As the 20th anniversary is symbolised by usually white china which is rather clinical, Winnie Sin decided the theme would be orange. “I like it as orange is the colour of mandarins, kumquats and tangerines. They are called ‘kum’ in Cantonese which means ‘gold’ which is very auspicious!’ beamed the birthday girl, all a-glitter in a dress by Albert King. It worked like a charm as everyone enjoyed the evening which flowed as smoothly as champagne.

Her guests swooned over her birthday gift from her doting husband--- RM 1.3 million, magnificent golden pearl and diamond necklace. Very few women can claim to be so lucky but then, Winnie Sin did give him 2 sons and 2 daughters! The necklace was perfectly matched by her Jimmy Choo shoes embellished with similar gold pearls handmade by Datuk Professor Jimmy Choo who presented the pale cream shoes to the birthday girl on stage and even went down on his knees to put on her shoes the way he did for Princess Diana!

Many guests came decked in orange, the ideal foil for Winnie Sin’s green jade, another of her specialty as she deals only in jade, pearl and ruby, using diamonds as settings.

Winnie’s celebrated touches were seen everywhere. The waiters and waitresses wore orange aprons embroidered with ‘Mandalay’ or ‘Rafflesia’.

L1230175.JPG

The stunning floral displays of sunflowers and orchids nearly reached the ceiling.

The spectacularly decorated ballroom flaunted 2-metre high floral arrangements of sunflowers and orchids that almost reached the ceiling from the tables. There was a bottle of (what else?) orange juice for every guest and the napkin was of bright orange, so pretty many guests felt obliged to sneak one home as souvenir. Winnie’s official photographers and staff wore bright orange t-shirts emblazoned with her logo. I almost fancied it was a Vodafone party since that company’s slogan is ‘The Future’s So Bright It’s Orange’ as its corporate colour is orange! Since Vodafone is even more successful and richer than the Sins, it is great feng shui to share the same corporate colour!

Each guest was given a mini wedding cake of white and orange inside an orange-ribboned transparent box. Her bottles of mineral water and champagne featured photos of a sultry, smouldering Winnie Sin looking like a Hong Kong superstar laden in jade jewels. Previously the bottles only had wrappers featuring the names of her companies but since my shirts and pants all contain my smirking portraits, I told her she should add her image to the wrappers. She is usually mistaken for an actress or Taiwanese singer and these professionally taken images simply reinforced her superstar persona. After all, Winnie Sin is so beautiful she should make good use of her God given gifts the same way I thank Buddha and Jesus Christ for their blessings by having around 35 shirts and 40 pants painted with my face! One should be pleased and proud of what God has given and celebrate by promoting whatever assets you possess!

Remember; whatever you do will always be criticised by some jealous plebeian so just do whatever you want inside the law!

The evening jump-started with Azhar Osman, the baby-faced winner of Idola followed by Jacqueline Victor who later dueted with Azahar with ‘Prayer’ dedicated to Mr and Mrs Sin. Sheila Hamzah, winner of One in A Million, sang a Mandarin number as she could speak Chinese. Shafinaz Selamat the operatic singer wowed the crowd with her usual flair and mastery of vocals. Teja Moss was in her element dishing out popular numbers but the evening belonged to Maria Cordero who flew in from Hong Kong just to attend Winnie’s bash.

The ever affable and jolly Maria Cordero stormed the stage and bantered with emcee Bill Bora. Beamed the singer, actress and chef from Macau who is half Chinese and half Portuguese, “I don’t need any introduction! I am Portuguese from my face till my neck but the rest is Chinese! I have 6 children and am grandmother of 12! I am married to my darling ‘loukong’ (husband) and I am here to party! Did you know Richard Gere copied my husband’s hair? When he saw my loukong’s silver hair, he too changed his hair colour!

“I am impressed so many made the effort to dress in orange as I tell you, this is not an easy colour to come by. I brought an orange outfit but Winnie gave me this lovely caftan by Rifai who made it based on my photos as he did not measure me yet it fits so well and makes me feel so glamorous!”

Maria Cordero serenaded a love song to the couple before rousing the guests from their seats for the Baby Elephant Walk which meandered through the entire ballroom.

There was a lucky draw for 5 winners and several cake cuttings at intervals. The first was in honour of Winnie’s birthday where she was flanked by 6 beauty queens. The second cake cutting had her family and inlaws and finally there was a line up of 9 birthday cakes on stage as Winnie is the sort who enjoys hosting and toasting. “I invited those who were celebrating their birthdays in May to join me in an advanced or belated celebration,” explained the generous Winnie Sin who preferred to share the birthday limelight.

Winnie promised her 30th wedding anniversary will be even more spectacular as it will be her Pearl Anniversary while her 40th will be Ruby, two of her forte! I can see her 30th wedding anniversary party now; rows upon rows of pearls cascading from the ceiling, draped over floral arrangements and with edible ones coating the cake and food. All her guests would arrive in precious Rafflesia pearls and there would be a giant pearl made of cardboard/Styrofoam brought into the ballroom from which Winnie Sin would pop out dressed like a mermaid with pearls covering her décolleté and shining inbetween the scales of her tail!

Ten more years to go!

THE END
