The winners of The BrandLaureate BestBrands
Award 2016-2017 were announced by the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation (APBF) at
its gala dinner, held at The Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The prestigious Awards
night was attended by Guest of Honor, Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Dato' Sri Haji Abdullah
Ahmad Badawi, the 5th Prime Minister of Malaysia and the newly appointed
Patron of the Asia Pacific Brands Foundation.
The dinner was also attended by 1,000
guests comprising corporate leaders, brand owners and leading personalities.
The theme for this
year’s award is Take Responsibility of Your Brand for Your Brand Integrity, Quality,
Credibility which is to encourage brands to take responsibility
especially during this difficult and competitive time.
Responsibility is the
key word as it determines the success or failure of any brands. Consumers would
only trust a brand that is responsible, one that has INTEGRITY and known for
its QUALITY products and services. In today's world, where consumers are more
affluent and fastidious, brands must have integrity and quality to build
CREDIBILITY.
The success of the
recipient is reflected in the trophy which is crafted in pewter and plated in
24K gold. The dimensions created by the polygons represent the movement of the
brand as successful brands are dynamic and has a fluidity which allows them to
move with time.
Meanwhile, the image of the trophy with its clenched fist
positioned at the heart signifies the commitment to responsibility and the
determination to build the brand to its highest level.
In his welcome speech, Dr KK Johan, President
of The BrandLaureate congratulated all the winners of the Award and expounded
on the Award's chosen theme, “This is an appropriate theme as it reflects the
importance of being responsible in branding. Everyone and anyone can brand but
to embark on responsible branding, one needs to have a clear understanding of
what is a brand and its significance to the organization, community and
country.
"A
successful brand is driven by a responsible brand leader who is committed and
dedicated to the performance and sustainability of his organization’s brand."
During the night, over 60 companies and
individuals received The BrandLaureate Awards which were divided into the

The BrandLaureate Elite of Elites Brand Leadership Awards honors the top leaders of industries who have led their
brands to be market leaders.

BrandLaureate BestBrands Awards are carefully selected by the selection
committee. Each Award winners have shown exceptional accomplishments in
branding and these outstanding brands, products and personalities are the best
in their respective industry and have achieved dominance in their particular
niches.
The prestigious event also saw President of
The BrandLaureate, Dr KKJohan presenting the newly appointed Patron of the Asia

Good
evening Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome to
The BrandLaureate Best Brands Awards 2016-2017!
It is
indeed a momentous occasion as we come together to celebrate the best of brands
in the industry. These winning brands have performed well in their areas of
brands and branding to clinch this prestigious title, The BrandLaureate Best
Brands Awards.
I am most
proud of their achievements as they reflect the theme of this year’s award
which is Take Responsibility of Your Brand for Your Brand Integrity, Quality
& Credibility.
This is an appropriate theme as it reflects the
importance of being responsible in branding. Everyone and anyone can brand but
to embark on responsible branding, one needs to have a clear understanding of
what is a brand and its significance to the organisation, community and
country.
Branding is
an investment, one which can give good returns and bad returns. How we build a
successful investment portfolio depends on the strategies taken to grow the
investment. If we are a responsible investor and do the necessary things to
maximize and at the same time safeguard the investment, we will find our
investments growing.
If we are irresponsible and do not take care of our
investment or invest recklessly, then we are going to be badly burned and lose
our savings. This analogy can be applied to branding, where responsible
branding will bring good returns and irresponsible branding leads to brands
sinking into the doldrums.
Responsible
branding is also about responsible leadership. Why is there a need for
responsible leadership? In every brand,
there is a brand leader that drives the brand.
A successful brand is driven by
a responsible brand leader who is committed and dedicated to the performance
and sustainability of his organisation’s brand.
A committed leader can see the vast spectrum of opportunities that the
brand offers and how to tap and capitalise on it. He is also aware that while
growth and profitability is important, the brand must have good brand values
and culture and deliver on its brand promise.
A
responsible brand leader is one who will work on its brand sustainability,
rather than kill it. Brands are only as good as its leader and the people
behind it. At the end of the day, it is the people who make or break the brand
and as all of you know, a strong internal brand is crucial to brand success and
sustainability.
In today’s
borderless and fast pace world, consumers want instant gratification and at the
same time demand that brands provide quality products and services. They lean
towards brands that have a positive brand image and good corporate governance.
Hence, the need for brands to be responsible and have the values of integrity,
quality and credibility as their key attributes. It is even better if these
attributes form the DNA of the brand.
Responsible
brands gain the trust of consumers and with trust, brand loyalty is developed.
Trust is also synonymous with reliability and I have observed that brands that
are trusted and reliable have a strong culture of transparency and
accountability which further enhances their brand perception, leadership
position and reputation.
The path to
brand success is a long journey and one must have the resilience and tenacity
to see it through. Like they say, Rome was not built in a day; so I urge all of
you in this hall tonight, to continuously invest in your brand if you want to
reap good returns.
Again, like
the saying, “No Pain, No Gain”, success
does not fall from the sky. Going through the tough times will strengthen your
resilience and make you stronger in overcoming the odds that come along. A
responsible brand leader is one that will run the extra mile for the brand and
in the process further strengthen the foundation of the brand.
Ladies and
gentlemen, as recipients of The BrandLaureate Best Brands Awards 2016-2017, you
are the best in your industry and you have achieved your standing as you have
embraced the culture of responsibility in all your pursuits and build on your
brand integrity, quality and credibility.
