Marriott International Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR) announced the signing of the 161-room HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa in Kyoto, Japan with the Mitsui Fudosan Group, Japan’s largest comprehensive real estate group, and is expected to open in November 2020.  Once opened, the hotel is expected to mark the fourth Luxury Collection Hotel in Japan following Suiran, The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, and IRAPH SUI.

For more than 300 years, the site of the new hotel was the residence of the Kitake, the executive branch of the Mitsui family, whose patriarch had constructed a home facing Nijo Castle, which housed the Tokugawa Shogunate in 17th-century Kyoto. Today the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, with the Mitsui property transformed into a uniquely luxurious destination.

With its rich history lovingly preserved by a stellar team of architects and designers, HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO is set to be a remarkable showpiece that blends tradition with modern design. Its 300-year-old entrance, The Kajiimiya Gate has been elegantly retained, and is expected to usher guests into a world of luxury inspired by the indigenous culture and prosperous traditions of old Kyoto.

“We are pleased to partner with Mitsui Fudosan Group in adding Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa to our iconic portfolio in Japan,” said Paul Foskey, Chief Development Officer, Asia Pacific, Marriott International.  “Set to be the fourth Luxury Collection hotel in Japan, this property is testament to Marriott International’s continued growth in the region.”

The architectural team behind the 161-room HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO is led by celebrated architect Akira Kuryu of A.KURYU ARCHITECT & ASSOCIATES Co., Ltd, with the interiors of the hotel’s lobby and guest rooms designed by renowned Interior Designer André Fu. The lobby and guestrooms are modern expressions of time-honored Japanese aesthetics, favoring clean minimalist lines and luxurious natural materials throughout.

The property will also feature over 1,300 square meters of landscaped strolling gardens designed by famed landscape designer Shunsaku Miyagi, offering guests the beauty and serenity of a classical Japanese garden.

The hotel’s restaurants will be designed by acclaimed Interior Designer Yohei Akao, all of which overlook the gardens. With an expected five dining venues offering gastronomy Teppan that blends Japanese and French cuisine, an Italian-inspired venue to the hotel’s cozy lounge and bar, the hotel is set to be an ideal local dining and events destination.

Also designed by Yohei Akao is a stunning Thermal Spring Private Onsen in the hotel’s spa, offering guests a wonderfully therapeutic traditional Japanese onsen experience. The hotel also features four treatment rooms to offer ultimate relaxation for guests and a Fitness Center featuring the latest equipment to stay fit while on the road.
