PINK JAMBU PRESENTS TENUN
PAHANG DIRAJA
In conjunction with Pink
Jambu's 25th anniversary, this special event in collaboration with Tenun Pahang
Diraja aims to promote two of Malaysia's most respected crafts---batek and tenun.
Two years ago, the art of
weaving Tenun in Pahang was fast diminishing, with only two weavers left in
the state. The craft was at risk of extinction when Tengku Puan Pahang, consort of the
Crown Prince of Pahang decided to intervene.
A patron of local crafts
and a philantrophist in her own right, the energetic Tengku Puan Pahang has
since supported Tenun Pahang Diraja to increase production of Tenun and save the dying art.
Within two years of
investment and unwithering support from the royal family of Pahang, the number
of weavers has since increased to 200.
Starting from
scratch, everything from workshops, equipment and training to
teach the weavers had to be built, purchased and installed from ground zero.
A full year of
preparation had finally brought this collaboration to fruition. The two
fabric houses have worked closely for a year in order to present complementary
design textiles. For this event, 50 pairs of Tenun and Pink
Jambu batik were presented to an enthusiastic audience of around a hundred society ladies and members of royalty.
The main idea behind the collaboration was
to stitch modernity with traditionalism. Over the past 25 years, Pink
Jambu has consistently stood at the forefront of modern batik, offering reductionist
designs in order to create a harmonious brand of batik.
The event showcased tenun against the backdrop of modern hand-painted batik designs by Pink Jambu. Pink Jambu has made a name using the method of canting, which is
a spout tool that pours wax onto the fabric. The brand hopes to offer a modern
interpretation of how the classical tenun can be worn today and how the
pairing of tenun and batik can complement each other beautifully.
The collaboration hopes to bring to the
fore tenun, a nearly lost art of Malaysian heritage that began 300
years ago in the state of Pahang which experienced a dratsic decline in recent years.
After the patronage of Tengku Puan Pahang, the art of weaving in Pahang
gained a revival through a social enterprise Tenun Pahang Diraja that hopes to put
society’s most marginalised back on their feet by literally “weaving for a brighter
future”.
This year, Pink Jambu is celebrating 25 years
of luxury batik and Tenun
Pahang Diraja (woven silk from Pahang).
The main idea behind the collaboration is to bring together modernity and
traditionalism.
Founded in Kuala Lumpur, Pink Jambu has
stood at the vanguard of modern batik through its reductionist designs. Despite
its modern vision, the brand stays rooted in canting (spouted wax-pouring tool), the traditional method used to
hand-paint its harmonious colours on luxurious silks.
The art of woven silk which
originated in Pekan, Pahang was almost lost to Malaysia
a decade ago. Tenun Pahang Diraja’s inimitable champion is the Tengku Puan Pahang,
who has in the past ten years promoted the education
and production of tenun.
The majority of weavers of Tenun Pahang
Diraja are inmates from prisons of Penor, Pekan and Bentong. It is a social
enterprise whose goal is to teach inmates a vocational skill that can become
their future livelihood and also to introduce weaving as a form of art therapy
for prisoners.
One 2 metre piece of tenun can take up to
three months to complete. Inmates are paid RM 500 for every completed piece, which
can be withdrawn at the end of their custody period or passed on to their
families during custody.
Che Minah Sayang, the commercial arm of Tenun Pahang
Diraja has already employed a number of released inmates, offering them a
stable income.
The event, a luxurious breakfast affair, took place at Colonial Café in Majestic Hotel. Majestic hotel is a heritage
building so it was most appropriate one of Kuala Lumpur’s most prestigious
colonial landmarks played host to an affair that looks back at tradition through
a contemporary vision.
