PERTH FASHION FESTIVAL 21 TO 27 SEPTEMBER 2011

kee@fswmag.com

ANYTIME IS A GOOD TIME TO VISIT PERTH, CAPITAL OF THE VAST STATE OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA BUT IF YOU HAPPEN TO BE AROUND 21 TO 27 SEPTEMBER, MAKE SURE YOU SWAN DOWN TO CATCH THE LATEST FASHION STATEMENTS DOWN UNDER.

WHILE OZ HAS PRODUCED MEGA STARS LIKE MY FAVOURITES NICOLE KIDMAN AND CATE BLANCHETT, IT HAS YET TO ASSAIL THE FASHION INDUSTRY WITH A SUPERSTAR DESIGNER. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW. ONE OF THE DESIGNERS SHOWING IN PERTH FASHION FESTIVAL MAY WELL BE THE SUCCESSOR, SO TO SPEAK, TO JOHN GALLIANO, THE DISGRACED HERO FROM DIOR. SINCE GALLIANO LEFT, HIS REPLACEMENT, THE UNHEARD OF BILL GAYTTEN HAS SHOWN HIS FIRST HAUTE COUTURE SHOW TO DISMAL RESULT.

I CAN SCARCELY BELIEVE THE HOUSE OF DIOR WOULD ALLOW SUCH AWKWARD BAJU TO BE SENT DOWN THE RUNWAY! AFTER ALL, THE ATELIER'S SEAMSTRESSES, PATTERN CUTTERS AND MACHINISTS MUST HAVE BEEN USED TO MAKING COUTURE UNDER GALLIANO AND FERRE ETC SO THEY SHOULD HAVE PHYSICALLY STOPPED SOME OF THE DRESSES FROM BEING MADE, LET ALONE SHOWN TO A DISBELIEVING AND DISAPPOINTED PUBLIC. SO THERE, DIOR IS PROBABLY SCOUTING FOR YET ANOTHER REPLACEMENT AND I HEARD THEY ARE CASTING FOR YOUNG UNKNOWNS AND GOD KNOWS, THERE ARE HEAPS OF THEM, ME INCLUDED, THOUGH I AM RATHER KNOWN AND MORE OR LESS YOUNG.

PERTH FASHION FESTIVAL is boosting its 2011 designer line up with designer capsule shows which is a novel idea not used before.

In a concept-first for Perth Fashion Festival (PFF), Paperskye, Lisa Marjanovich, Little Gracie, Poppy Lissiman, On Tour and Bhalo will showcase their Spring Summer 2011/12 collections in a series of designer capsule runway shows at Fashion Paramount in September.

Designer Capsules 1 and 2 will each present three Western Australian designer collections. Each designer will present 15-20 looks with their own choice of runway theme, music, lighting, hair, make-up and models.

The designer capsule concept was introduced to the Festival this year to expand the runway showcase opportunities for designers.

“We have integrated dedicated capsule shows into this year’s program to provide designers that aren’t having standalone shows a forum in which they can present an edited version of their latest collections on a grand scale,” said Perth Fashion Festival Designer Liaison, Jacqui Brown.
“These shows will also give audiences a unique opportunity to view each designer’s collection and learn more about his or her aesthetic. Every capsule show will be individualised so the essence of each designer is clearly conveyed and guests will have a sense of having been to three stand-alone shows within the one event,” Ms Brown said.

Describing Designer Capsule 1, which features Paperskye, Lisa Marjanovich and Little Gracie, Ms Brown, said the show would be “one for the girls”, characterised by the soft, feminine, “girly” charm of the showing designers.

Paperskye was the winner of the 2009 WA Fashion Awards Designer of Tomorrow category, and has since gone on to show at Rosemount Australia Fashion Week (RAFW).

Little Gracie (what a name---why not Little Hamster which is even cuter?) was this year accepted into the prestigious American Paris Academy of Fashion in France. Designer, Ebony Harding flies to Paris to attend the Academy later this year, but will be back in time for her collection’s showing at PFF.

For Lisa Marjanovich, tipped by Perth’s fashion community as ‘the next big thing’, Designer Capsule 1 will showcase her debut collection.

Designer Capsule 2, featuring Poppy Lissiman, On Tour and Bhalo, is tipped to be an extravaganza of colour and print, thanks to the bright style and fabrics used by the three designers.

Poppy Lissiman, who has developed a cult following in Dubai, Australia’s East Coast and WA, creates her own digital prints and showed earlier this year at RAFW.

On Tour is the only label on the PFF runway this year representing Southern WA. Designer, Alicia Sorgiovanni from Harvey, will showcase her casual and colourful designs, inspired by the relaxed country lifestyle she’s grown to adore.

The earthiness of Melbourne-based designer, Jess Priemus’ label, Bhalo will also be showcased, featuring her designs created using only ethically and organic hand-made fabrics from Bangladesh.

Designer Capsules 1 and 2 will be held at Fashion Paramount, Hackett Hall – Western Australian Museum.

Perth Fashion Festival will be held from 21 – 27 September.
