Maggie Loo giving bouquet of flowers which I think was a waste of effort as the florals were too big, covered the sash and worse, no one could see the flowers due to the wrapping papers and we did not come to see a flower show!

Just so you know, the cheque flaunted the amount RM 200,000 cash, not prizes and gifts

IT WAS JUST AS WELL I WENT WITH JUDGE AND TOP DESIGNER CARVEN ONG AS I THOUGHT THE EVENT WAS AT SUNWAY RESORT, HOTEL AND SPA GRAND BALLROOM! BUT THAT WAS DEEMED TOO SMALL BY FUSION EXCEL THE PRESENTER AND PAUL TING THE MISS MALAYSIA WORLD FRANCHISE HOLDER.

MIND YOU, FUSION EXCEL HAS OVER A HUNDRED THOUSAND MEMBERS SO ALL 1,500 TICKETS SOLD OVERNIGHT AND SUNWAY PYRAMID CONVENTION CENTRE WAS PACKED TO THE RAFTERS.

AS WE ARRIVED, CARVEN AND I WERE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED FUSION EXCEL HAD ARRANGED FOR HIM TO PARK RIGHT OUTSIDE THE ENTRANCE TO S.P CONVENTION CENTRE! IT SAID A LOT ABOUT THE ORGANISER'S PROFESSIONALISM TO EVEN TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE PARKING FACILITIES FOR JUDGES AND SPECIAL GUESTS!

Worthy of a Sultanah or Empress

AS IT WAS, CARVEN AND I SIMPLY ENTERED THE BACKSTAGE DIRECTLY AS THE DOOR WAS RIGHT NEXT DOOR. HOWEVER THIS WAS NOT THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE CONVENTION CENTRE WHICH WAS ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE.

THE SHOW STARTED PROMPTLY AT 7PM DUE TO BUKA PUASA AT 7.26PM. EARLIER THERE WAS A FUSION EXCEL EVENT FOR NEW AND OLD MEMBERS. DINNER STARTED ON THE DOT OF BUKA PUASA. THE GUEST OF HONOUR WAS HENG SEAI KEI THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF THE MINISTRY OF WOMEN, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.

THE SHOW STARTED WITH 'WAU BULAN', THE TRADITIONAL MALAY DANCE TUNE FROM MY HOME STATE KELANTAN BUT THE MUSICIANS STUNNED THE AUDIENCE AS THEY WERE FROM 3 RACES! THE MALAY MUSICIANS USED THEIR TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTS WHILE THE CHINESE AND INDIANS USED THEIRS! TRULY A CASE OF 1MALAYSIA! WELL DONE, PAUL TING AND MAGGIE LOO AND HER HUSBAND LIM NAM AIK!

Clarke Gamo, 11, sang 'Ben' and this was followed by 'We Are the World' sung by Clarke, Fusion Excel directors and guests on stage. Each of the 25 finalists had to answer the obligatory question and I was amazed at their response. Almost all spoke eloquently (relatively!) and produced great answers. Their 1-month stay had worked wonders as each was composed and confident and none made a blunder as I was hoping. Like I said, I like seeing beauties in distress so I can come to their rescue...

Anyway since I was betting on Chloe Chen, I paid particular attention to her. Her question was how she would like to be remembered. She replied charmingly, "I want to be remembered for my big heart, my compassion and kindness. I also want to be known for my involvement in the environment. The environment is very important as we depend on it for our own survival so we must look after it for our children and future generations. I also believe in recycling everything we can so as not to waste our resources."

This was followed by children dancers which was marvellous and a treat to watch. I had never seen a lion dance performed by little kids nor an Indian peacock dance by children. Mind you, all proceeds are going to Hope for Children charity so this show was superbly suitable!

The subsidiary titles were announced; Miss Talent was Doreen Tan, Miss Photogenic was Janet Bennet, Miss Congeniality was Lillian Lee, Miss Personality was Kohinoor Kaittiani, Miss Beach Beauty was Evelyn Huan and Miss Beauty with a Purpose (the slogan of Miss World) was Chua Yee See.

The top 5 were Evelyn Huan, Chua Yee See, Yvonne Lee, Pamela Tan and my favourite Chloe Chen Tien Nee. She looks mat salleh as her mother is French just as Nadia Heng's mother is English. All these Eurasians look so divine, so unfair for the pure Chinks and other races!

Each was asked the same, final question; Why should you be chosen?
Chua Yee See replied, "I used to be an introvert and not a stage person so I dedicated myself into becoming a better person. Now I am bold and confident!"

Pamela Tan also suffered from stage fright. "I now have the courage to be the real me with the right training and I am keen on charity work."

Chloe Chen declared she had passion and ability and am committed and responsible. "To be heard you must listen first. I am a good listener and am determined to be the voice of the less fortunate."

Yvonne Lee insisted she was beautiful inside and out. "I am intelligent, know a lot and compassionate so I am fit to be the next Miss World!"

Evelyn Huan too wanted to help children and motivate them. I used to be scared of standing in front of people and talking to a crowd. Now I am doing just that and I have a voice."

After the coronation, I asked Chloe if she expected to win. She said excitedly, "No, not at all. Even being in the Top 5 seemed like a dream. I just did my best."

What about her RM 200,000? "I will settle my education loan of RM 28,000 which is the most important and then plan for the rest!"

Congratulations and bring that crown home from London!

The end
