Never a dull moment with the Games in my new Lumia!

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A FAN OF NOKIA AND NEVER THOUGHT OF USING A SMARTPHONE AS I REFUSED TO CHANGE MY NOKIA 8800 SIROCCO LIMITED GOLD EDITION THAT SOLD FOR RM 5,999.

CRAFTED OF 14-K GOLD, IT WAS MY PRIDE AND JOY FOR THE LAST 6 OR 7 YEARS AND CAUGHT EVERYONE'S ATTENTION AT ALL THE PARTIES, GALAS AND SOIREES I ATTENDED RELIGIOUSLY.

Alas, after so many long years of dependable usage, it suffered a shutdown last week. At first it gave a warning sign as I could not access my phone book. But after every few hours I could enter fleetingly before the screen went blank again. However, I could still use it as a normal phone as all other functions worked like with Finnish precision.

Still, I felt even a dinosaur like me needed a new back-up phone so I trotted to the nearest Nokia and was shown the 710 Nokia at an affordable RM 999 which is 6 times cheaper than my Nokia 8800 Sirocco Gold! And has more advanced, cutting edge features and is as sleek as my Christian Louboutain shoes.

Since I am not a gadget-gangster, I took the 710 rather than the 800 which costs RM 500 more as the only differences are amoled screen and 8 MP camera whereas my 710 already has a great screen and 5 MP camera which is good enough as I usually use my Leica and Canon cameras when shooting important events.

Using the Nokia is supposed to be easy-weesy-peesy but I was flummoxed by the touch screen keyboard which seems to be the size of a matchbox. How can my fingers, slim as they are, flick out the words?

True enough, I had great difficulty typing as kept getting A when I typed S or E when I wanted R as the alphabets are so close to each other! Worse, I even tried using a blunt end of a pen but it would not work! Apparently I still need my finger but the Nokia 710 keyboard is not the same size as my Acer computer keyboard!

"You just need 3 days to get the hang of it. I took 4." said Steve of Nokia. Concurred Carol Murugiah, "Once you master the new Nokia smartphone, you will never go back to your old analog phone again."

Glen Cha even showed me his fingers as did Steve. Both had fingers bigger, thicker and fatter than mine! "See, our fingers are bigger than yours and if we can type easily, you should be even better!"

I looked at my slim and sexy fingers with pride. They must be right! Anyway, with the prediction system in place, it is easier and faster actually. If I type 'Appre...' several words would appear at the top, like 'Appreciate', 'Apprehend' or 'Apprentice'! And when I type 'y', two most common words 'you' and 'your' pop up instantly!

Even more astonishing, the phone could predict or assume certain common words despite my pressing the first or second alphabets wrongly! For instance, I want to spell 'another' but press 'abo' and words like 'about', 'above' and 'another' will appear! Quite miraculous to a lowtech person like me!

My old Nokia phone did not have a continuous message inflow as each sms arrived individually. As a result, if the recipient replied a day or two late, sometimes I could hardly recall the question I asked or what I wrote! Now I have online threads and all messages appear coherently and in sequence! No more cracking my brains when my recipient replies "Yes, ok I agree". Agree to what, where, why and when!!!!

I also have to remember to press the button at the top right corner so it enters the power saving mode and is semi-switched off. Earlier I assumed once the screen goes dark, it is auto power saving mode so I put it inside my pocket. But I must have accidentally pressed against it as it rang my friend 6 times in a row!

The only sang is 'Profile History' as the phone number for Call Mobile is so small you need a magnifying glass to see the figures! It is also impossible to enlarge the numbers which is ridiculous as half the screen remains empty so there is plenty of space to show the phone number in large sizes. Not every Nokia user is 20 years old with razor sharp, perfect vision you know! I am still trying to figure out how to check on Missed Calls and retrieve my missed calls but as this is only my third day, I am sure I will discover how to do this soon enough.

But apart from this, my new Nokia 710 is as good and user friendly as it gets. So if you are in the market for a new phone, I don't think anything beats my Nokia 710 for its techno supremacy and affordability as RM 999 is really no cause to moan over the price.
