The inaugural Malaysian Women of Excellence Awards 2014 to recognise and honour outstanding women was officiated by YB Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Minister of the Federal Territories.

The Awards, the first of its kind in Malaysia, is the most prestigious and premier event recognising outstanding Malaysian women who have contributed greatly and excelled in their fields of expertise. 

It was also the largest gathering of powerful women in the country.

A total of 47 winners, shortlisted from more than 2,000 nominees, were selected based upon their individual qualities of Vision, Leadership, Achievements, Corporate Performance and Community Engagement. 

They include YBhg Tan Sri Mazidah Abdul Majid, YBhg Datuk Seri Siti Azizah Sheikh Abod, YBhg Datuk Maznah Hamid, YBhg Dato’ Faridah Merican, Datin Paduka Mother A. Mangalam, Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza, Dato’ Nicol David, Datin Clara Chee, Datin Winnie Loo, Aireen Omar, Shareen Ooi, Madam Kwan and Amee Philips, Malaysia's top jeweller.

More than 500 guests were assembled to witness the tribute paid to these distinguished women who tower above ordinary standards and expectations to make a difference to their lives and their community.

Among the notable personalities include YB Tan Sri Dr Madinah Mohamad, YAB Dato’ Seri Paduka Hj Mukhriz Mahathir, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz and ambassadors from Belgium, Argentina, Switzerland, Mexico and Japan.

Speaking at the award presentation ceremony, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan said: “Women contribute to a substantial difference in society. When women do well, the society does better. The reason for this is because women focus their attention on the betterment of individuals first.”

Extolling the virtues of women, he said, “Women generally analyse better and engage in less precarious behaviour. They lean towards decision-making based on understanding and mutual benefit, creating a win-win situation for all. This is what makes them better at handling people, better at securing achievements that others may not be capable of.

Their objective is to create wholesome, empowered people around them whose aim is to have the needs of society in mind in anything they do. Then, by aligning that aim with their personal mission – which now involves their line of work or passion – they will spur these individuals on to do their best for the people, organisation, community and country they serve.”

Datin Shairin Mohd Sharif, CEO of Event Port Sdn Bhd, said that the event is driven by an explicit mission to build a strong network of high-achieving and affluent women to make a collective conscious effort towards helping others realise and enjoy the inherent qualities present within every individual.

“All the award winners exhibited the power to rise above their individual circumstances; brought down barriers; and crushed all hindrances stemming from gender discrimination,” said Datin Shairin, adding that the Awards also served as a platform for NAADI.

NAADI – which stands for Network, Advocacy, Action, Design and Integration – is a networking platform that provides the opportunity for women to associate with other women to accelerate the branding of oneself in pursuing personal and professional passions.

All winners from the Malaysian Women of Excellence will be engaged in NAADI, which will soon open its doors to all Malaysian women.
