There are 2 Busaba Thai restaurants, one in Bangsar Shopping Centre and the second in Sunway Resort, Hotel & Spa at Bandar Sunway.
Busaba Thai at BSC is older and made headlines with its jewel-toned decor so lush and plush and decadent you might expect a shoulder massage as you dine.
But BSC is low-ceilinged with limited space so while it is lovely and lovingly decorated, the Busaba Thai at Sunway is miles ahead and is in a league of its own!
It is so lavish and extravagant any Thai royal can stroll in and feel like home. The double-height ceiling means a spectacular chandelier is in order and I am not disapppointed.
A massive, mother of all lamps hangs prominently, made more enticing as the entire 12-ft high edifice is wrapped in dark netting! I have never seen a tudung-lamp before so it is quite exotic!
I assume the bulbs are low-energy as the heat from normal bulbs might burn the netting. But explained Trisna Lim the brand manager, "The fabric is heat-resistant and flame-proof! So don't worry about it being a fire hazard!"
Opened on 14 February, Valentine's Day this year, Busaba Thai Sunway is already acclaimed for its interior which is designed by its owner Thanee Laivarintr who was briefly with Imperial Chakri Thai Restaurant in KLCC which also serves excellent Thai food.
Thanee has been in Malaysia for over 30 years and is married to a Malaysian. His Absolute Thai company, part of S.E.A Cuisine Group now owns and operates 24 Thai restaurants but only 2 are Busaba which is the flagship and fanciest brand.
Other restaurants in S.E.A Cuisine Group include the Amari, Absolute Thai, Celadon and Thai Thai chain of restaurants in KL plus Absolute Thai and Thai Accents in Singapore.
Busaba Thai Sunway is a decorater's dream as the high ceiling allows for a mezzanine floor while the 5,000 sq ft allows all sorts of machinations as the imagination is allowed to run riot.
And so it is.
Busaba Thai Sunway features antique doors hanging on walls, fresh and faux flowers, statue of King Chulalongkorn on horse, original paintings and even a chaise lounge wrapped in Union Jack flag!
I love the portrait of a Chinese girl with pageboy bob which I am told looks like Mrs Thanee.
Busaba Thai used to be Avanti Italian restaurant but Thanee has revamped it as to be unrecognisable as he is so artistic and ingenious. Even the entrance is relocated to face the main road so one does not have to trek through Sunway hotel and the glass walls heighten the airy ambiance.
Come for the food, stay for the vibes!
