A LANGUAGE OF THEIR OWN
A Language of Their Own is set to open in
DPAC(Damansara Performing Arts Centre) stage from 24th to 26th March 2017, a highly anticipated re-staging of the popular play by Singapore-born playwright Chay Yew.
This intensely powerful drama left audiences seared during its 2013 run and is now coming back to thrill those who want to relive the magic and newcomers with love and heartache.
Chay Yew’s touching play provides a window into some of life’s hardest, gentlest, and most tender moments. Relationships that can’t bear a name in some conservative societies face the biggest test – not just about societal progress, it is usually about the persons involved. The presence of the disease AIDS in the eighties did not make things better.
The language in these voices is the only path to freedom. This play celebrates that language. With this play, everyone can experience the voices and poetry within their language.
Director Woon Fook Sen is once again spearheading the production and described the beautifully written and meaningful script as a rare and special piece. “Love is always a complex emotion and this text has a healing effect which surpasses time.”
Alfred Loh, Gregory Sze, Dennis Yeap and Jayson Phuah will bring out the inner voices of the LGBTI community in this production.
As they rehearse, they have discovered a little more about the gay community in the eighties in Singapore, their tastes and preferences, their favourite hangout places, the friendships they choose to forge, besides those out of personal need and convenience.
These men are more than just a face. They have got histories in them, like the community. In this day and age, when “I love You” seems flippant and free-giving, could the three words regain their significance?. A Language of Their Own will seek out the answer.
