HIS EXCELLENCY MR FOLCO DE LUCA GABRIELLI AND HIS LOVELY WIFE MADAM NILOU DE LUCA GABRIELLI HOSTED A CHARITY DINNER AT THEIR ELEGANT RESIDENCE IN HIGH CLASS AMPANG HILIR AREA IN AID OF EMPOWERED, THE CANCER CHARITY SERVING THE POOR.
The gourmet dinner and auction of 26 items at their residence raised RM 109,050 for Empowered, the non-profit organisation serving cancer patients.
Madam Nilou la Luca Gabrielli, the magnificently-maned spouse of the Italian ambassador and the organising committee of Empowered roped in 51 generous Malaysians and foreign friends to pay RM 1,000 per person to attend the fund-raising dinner in aid of Empowered. The sumptuous meal was held in their elegant residence with free seating for guests spread over 7 tables.
With RM 51,000 safely in the kitty, another RM 58,000 was raised from the auction of 26 items ranging from antique hairpins, marble seal, jade pendants, silver amulets, silver belts, paintings, Laphroaig scotch whisky, Courvoiser cognac, economy class ticket to Rome sponsored by Malaysia Airlines to esoteric items like silver bolster ends and the rare ‘caping’ or modesty cap shaped as leaf for little children. All sold above their reserved prices as couture-clad guests sipping champagne and wine before tucking into food cooked by a visiting Italian chef knew their good fortune must be shared.
Nett proceeds went to Empowered, the Cancer Advocacy Society of Malaysia, a non-profit, non-governmental organisation registered as a society. Empowered was launched by the Director-General of the Ministry of Health in 2009.
Founded by encologist Dr Christina Ng, Empowered’s mission is to save lives, prevent cancer and serve the poor afflicted with cancer in Malaysia. Founder-president Dr Christine Ng was working at University Hospital when she was inspired to establish Empowered. As an encologist, she had treated poor patients from the poor strata of society.
Says Dr Christina Ng, “Cancer patients with little income live in fear and frustration. They are ignorant of new medicines, cannot afford expensive treatments and cannot afford to give up their job. Medical terms and jargon confuse them and everyone has advice or opinion to give and they don’t know who or what to believe.
“Empowered is here to listen, help and give them hope. We assure them cancer is not a life sentence even if they are poor. We strive to be champion of the poor cancer victims and bring to their home our structured programmes to help them cope with cancer and improve their quality of life.”
Madam Nilou Gabrielli met Dr Christina Ng last year at another charity dinner. The good doctor later contacted her regarding the possibility of joining forces. Madame Nilou recalled, “The organising committee of Empowered asked the Italian ambassador and myself if we could assist as they wanted an Italian theme for their annual fund raising.
“We were happy to help as we are always keen on charity initiatives. It is important to help the less fortunate, more so in a host country which has welcomed us so warmly. Hosting the charity dinner at our home is the least we can do to help the local community as our way of showing our gratitude and appreciation.”
The money has gone towards Empowered’s 2011 project on colon cancer screening and education programmes for poor communities living in Selayang and Gombak districts. A similar programme last year in Sentul led to many lives being saved through early detection. A lung and breast cancer screening allowed those with breast lumps to seek further tests and treatment.
A splendid Italian feast was enjoyed by the donors. Delicacies included mushroom carpaccio with truffles, marinated prawns, steamed lobster garullese style, cream of peas with shrimp, oven baked mussels, risotto with 34-carat (yes, not 24-carat) gold flakes, chicken with bell peppers, barramundi in salt, vegetarian lasagna, penne with pesto a and clams, octopus, potato and olive salad and delightful Italian pastries and desserts. Chef Tiziano Rossetti flew in from Riccione, the region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy last Monday and stayed a week and cooked for the occasion so it was a rare treat. The tables overflowed from inside the residence to al fresco dining by the swimming pool.
Many guests bidded each other for the auction items which were donated by friends, relatives and members of Empowered, proving charity does begin at home.
