MERCEDES-BENZ STYLO FASHION AWARDS GALA presents
Zang Toi’s “Mystique of Venice” with F1 safety
driver, Bernd Maylander

STYLO Fashion Grand Prix 2015 (MBSTYLOFGP 2015) culminated
with the much awaited Fashion Awards Gala with Zang Toi’s rousing “Mystique of
Venice”.
The awards night, billed as the high spot of the 3-day fashion festival,
was a true red-carpet event with the glitzy and glamorous dressed to the nines clamouring
to celebrate a glittering night of fashion excellence at Red Carpet Avenue @
Encorp Strand Mall.
The crème de le crème of Malaysian high society, were
invited including dignitaries, socialites, celebrities, and many more, making
the event a truly impressive affair.
Presented
by luxury
automaker Mercedes-Benz, the gala event also coincides with the beginning of
the Kuala Lumpur Formula One Grand Prix
weekend, from Friday, 27 March until Sunday, 29 March 2015. Also in attendance
was Bernd Maylander, German Formula One safety car driver at the event.
The night
started with a full course sit-down dinner which then proceeded to the night’s
biggest presentation, Zang Toi’s
“Mystique of Venice” fresh from his recent New York Fashion Week show which was a runaway success.
The show
opened with upcoming violinist and model Josh Kua, who performed on the sets of
“Venice”, recreated in its full glory at the marquee complete with dramatic theatrics.
The collection featured subtle hues, but the styling was over the top with
elaborate masks and head pieces keeping up with the anticipated “Masquerade”
theme of the night. The ornate and
extravagant face masks were courtesy of AXXEZZ by Gina-Frias Himpe.
Zang Toi's
final dress at the closing of his “Mystique of Venice” show was the piece that
drew the most gasps from the crowd that night. The final model closed the show
in Hollywood celebrity, Eva Longoria’s gorgeous white cut-out dress worn at the
Vanity Fair Oscar party in 2005, recreated especially for the night by Zang Toi.
The exact replica was also seen in resplendent red on Datuk Nancy Yeoh
(President & CEO of STYLO International) on the gala night.
The inclusion
of Zang Toi this year, paves the way in recognising successful Malaysians
around the world and a collaborative partnership with MBSTYLOFGP 2015.
Zang Toi’s small town boy made big internationally is a definite inspirational
story to every young, upcoming individual in the Malaysian fashion fraternity.
Zang Toi was awarded the Lifetime
Achievement Award in celebration of the 25th anniversary of his fashion
label, House of Toi at the fashion festival’s press conference held at Encorp
Strand Mall recently. This is the second time this award is presented to a well
deserving Malaysian, with Datuk Jimmy Choo, world renowned shoe couturier as
its first recipient in 2010.
Additionally,
this year MBSTYLOFGP in its effort to lend greater support to the Asian fashion
industry has teamed up with the Asia
Council of Fashion Designers (ACFD), a non-profit trade organisation
comprising a council from 15 Asian countries to present its inaugural 'Fashion Brand of the Year 2015' award.
ACFD, co-founded by Datuk Nancy Yeoh and Mr Timothy Chen of AF Global Inc., is
set-up to promote the fashion industry trade within Asia and globally.
The
2-consecutive year running Mercedes-Benz
STYLO Asia Fashion Week (MBSAFW) is the showcase platform of ACFD.
At the Fashion Awards Gala tonight, Datuk Jimmy Choo, Honorary Advisor to STYLO
International presented the ACFD 'Brand
of the Year 2015' to Miss Pat Liew, CEO of BritishIndia.
The award is in recognition of an international Asian brand for its achievement and contributions to the Asian fashion industry.

The
Mercedes-Benz STYLO Fashion Awards Gala also celebrated the best in the
local fashion scene through awards in various categories such as:
A. Designer of the Year 2015 – presented to Fairuz Ramdan
B. Best Designer Showcase 2015 –
presented to Bon Zainal
C. Best Male Model of the Year 2015 – presented to Nick Shoong Wai Hong
D. Best Female Model of the Year 2015 – presented to Eleen Yong Ee Leen
The
awards for the various categories above were presented in honour of distinctive
individuals who stand out in their respective fields of expertise in the
fashion arena.
Mr Roland
Folger, the President & CEO of Mercedes Benz Malaysia, said in his opening
speech, “Through the years, Mercedes-Benz STYLO Awards Gala, has unearth
and recognised some exceptional talents through this platform, and presented Malaysia to the world. We are happy to
continue this effort to push the boundaries further in the coming years.”
The night also witnessed the crowning of the much
awaited Emerging Designer of the Year
2015 winner.
This year’s competition, dedicated for the first time as a
stand-alone show at the FGP, witnessed each students’ personal interpretation
to the theme, “Fashion Anarchy”.
The much anticipated MBSTYLOFGP 2015 Emerging Designers Competition saw the
submission of over 100 entries, with only the 12 best participants shortlisted
to enter the semi-finals in a tough selection process.
The judges for the night were Datuk Nancy Yeoh
(President & CEO of STYLO International), Mr Roland Folger
(President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia), Ms Aureen Jean Nonis (Director
of Llifestyle Section, Matrade), Mr. Izwan Zainuddin (Chief Investment Officer
of MyCreative Ventures), Datin Hjh Sabrina Laila (Head of Encorp Strand Mall),
Datin Winnie Loo (Founder and Chief Creative Director A Cut Above Group of
Salons & Academy), Mr Bon Zainal (MBSTYLOFGP 2014 Designer of the
Year & Vice President of the Bumiputera Designers Association) and Ms Judy
Raine (wife of Mr Mark Raine, VP Sales & Marketing Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
The top 3 winners were Norsyahira Binti Khairudin (Management &
Science University), first runner-up Zoe Fang Chai Hui (SML Fashion Academy)
and second runner-up Vinny Lie (Lim Kok Wing University Of Creative Technology).
All 3 winners are further supported with a prize money by MyCreative Ventures
(a government investment arm to spur Malaysia’s creative industry) and a
platform to create and showcase their first collection at the Malaysia Fashion
Week 2015 later this year.
As STYLO
has never been an ordinary fashion festival, another interesting tribute this
year was to automobiles, commemorating its partnership with Mercedes-Benz in
relation to its “Fashion Anarchy” theme.
From the first age old transportation
in the form of boats to bicycles, tricycles and Mercedes-Benz cars including
A250, C200, CLA45AMG, E300 BTH, SLK200, these modes of transport took centre
stage at this year’s FGP.
At the opening
of MBSTYLOFGP 2015, the Stylo II “Shabby Chic” boat was unveiled by
Reissiger Marine, a subsidiary of STYLO International and its maritime
event partner set up to handle boat shows, maritime events and boat trading.
The Stylo II boat was launched a week before the FGP in sunny Langkawi at the
exclusive Telaga Harbour.
”Throughout
the festival, a Fashion Exhibition was
in place with the Stylo II “The Shabby Chic” boat as its highlight. The display
of Stylo II whose interior is dressed by Malaysian International Fashion
Designer, Zang Toi and Bon Zainal is to celebrate the inclusion of the maritime
lifestyle segment into Mercedes-Benz STYLO events” said Datuk Nancy Yeoh.
She added “Additionally,
there was an exclusive contest each night throughout the festival whereby the
best dressed fashionista in the 'Fashion Anarchy" theme stands a chance to
win “A day on board Stylo II” with 8 friends.
They will sail on board complete
with a bar installed by FGP’s beverage partner, Glenfiddich & Reyka and its
nasi lemak partner, Teh Tarik Place, serving its famous Malaysian delicacy plus
get to stay at my lovely house in Penang.”
