Religious policing gone awry
by Wan Saiful Wan Jan

Usually on the eve of Christmas some of us would be hoping for Santa Claus to come into their houses bringing gifts. But I had a very different experience during the last Christmas eve. I was invited by YB Dr Mujahid Yusuf Rawa, PAS MP for Parit Buntar, to speak at an event in his constituency on the evening of 24 December 2014. Since I was planning to ‘balik kampung’ to Perlis during the school holidays anyway, I duly accepted the invitation.

Why ASEAN matters
by Keith Leong

On Jan 1, Malaysia officially began its year-long chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), succeeding Myanmar. This event did not exactly dominate headlines and understandably so. Malaysians at the time were (and still are) grappling with the floods in many states, the tragic loss of Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8501 and question marks over the future of our economy in light of tumbling oil prices.

Defending national principles
By Tunku Abidin Muhriz

SINCE the new year thousands of people have died in terrorist acts of violence around the world. However, incidents in and around Paris that resulted in the deaths of 17 people last week received huge amounts of media coverage and triggered a march of over two million people, while victims elsewhere – possibly more than 2,000 around Baga in northeastern Nigeria at the hands of Boko Haram – got scant media attention, and certainly no marches in Abuja (there’s a presidential election campaign going on instead).

Oil and more open budget
by Tricia Yeoh

The budget department of the government’s treasury must surely be in panic mode at present, given that global oil prices have fallen by about half since the 2015 budget was announced, and especially since oil and gas takings contribute 30% of total national revenues.

TAT AND 3RD PLANET LAUNCH VIRTUAL REALITY TOUR OF BANGKOK'S GRAND PALACE

KEE@FSWMAG.COM

TAT and 3rd Planet launch virtual reality tour of Bangkok’s Grand Palace Monday 26 January, 2015

Bangkok, 26 January, 2015 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in partnership with 3rd Planet, a new media company which develops interactive 3D platforms for the travel and tourism industry, has launched a virtual reality tour of the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha – the kingdom’s best known and most visited tourist attractions.

Travellers from all around the world will now be able to take an amazing interactive 3D tour of Bangkok’s magnificent Grand Palace and explore the sacred Temple of the Emerald Buddha via 3rd Planet’s Wonders of the World platform, which is available on PCs, Smartphone’s and tablet devices for both iOS and Android users.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Director of Marketing Information Technology Group of TAT said, “This 3D virtual reality tour of the Grand Palace will allow travellers from all over the world to enjoy a much greater understanding of Thailand’s best-loved tourist attraction and its rich history.

By taking the tour, they will get a real feel for the place and can plan an itinerary for when they visit for real. And what is more, they will have an even greater understanding of the Palace’s importance to Thailand, its art and architecture, whether they are visiting for the first time or the tenth.”

The virtual reality tour of Bangkok’s Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha will give virtual visitors a bird’s-eye view of the famous attraction with marking pins to show highlights and interesting features. “Travellers” can also access information about the history and background of the temple and palaces in similar depth to a tour brochure or travel book.

Some of the facts that “travellers” will learn when taking this interactive 3D tour is that the Emerald Buddha image is the main attraction of the temple and is one of the most sacred religious images in Thailand.

The Emerald Buddha image is enshrined on a golden traditional Thai-style throne made of gilded- carved wood. There are 12 huge guardian giants protecting the temple and the galleries in the temple’s cloisters feature 2-kilometres of murals depicting around 178 scenes of the ancient Thai epic, the Ramakien.

The interactive 3D tour allows the “traveller” to move around important and beautiful tourist attractions simply by moving a computer mouse and clicking on points of interest. They can zoom in and out for a more detailed look and click to get information.

It is also possible to take a guided tour, which shows the most important aspects of the attraction accompanied by an informative commentary.

This state- of-the-art programme also gives useful information about services; such as, nearby shuttle bus services, F&B outlets, and opening/closing times. “Travellers” can also find out what other unique activities can be enjoyed nearby.

3rd Planet is a new media company that designs and constructs interactive 3D platforms for the tourist industry, so travellers can enjoy a much deeper understanding of the places they visit, or have already seen.

The company has already launched virtual reality tours for Macao’s The Venetian and now Bangkok’s Grand Palace. It is scheduled to launch interactive 3D tours of destinations in China, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, Japan and Nepal in the near future.

In 2012, Time magazine featured her as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World".  Trained at the Julliard School in New York City, the American actress made her feature film debut in Dan Ireland's Jolene in 2008.

Since then, she has earned critical acclaim for her leading roles in many major movies including Terrence Malik’s The Tree of Life, Tate Taylor’s The Help, earning her first Academy Award nomination, John Madden's The Debt, Take Shelter and Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark 30, for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama and received her 2nd Academy Award nomination.

Her most recent box office successes came from her roles in JC Chandor's A Most Violent Year, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination and won the National Board Of Review award for Best Supporting Actress, as well Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Interstellar.

For these films in addition to Ned Benson's The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby and Liv Ullman's Miss Julie, she was honored with the Broadcast Film Critics' Association's first ever Critic's Choice MVP award. She will next be seen in Guillermo Del Toro’ latest movie Crimson Peak and Ridley Scott's The Martian, both set for release Fall 2015.

About Piaget It was in La Côte-aux-Fées that Georges-Edouard Piaget set up his first workshop in the family farmhouse and devoted himself to producing high-precision movements. This was back in 1874 and marked the start of an ever-growing reputation. In 1943, the company took a decision that would prove crucial to its future by registering its brand name.

Faithful to its pioneering spirit, Piaget in the late 1950s set about designing and manufacturing the ultra-thin movements that would become one of the Maison’s signatures and leave a lasting impression on watchmaking. But Piaget was also a style: a marriage of gold and an explosion of color, new shapes, precious gems, and dials made of hard stones.

Carried along on the wave of extraordinary creativity driven by Yves G. Piaget, the brand’s jewelry collection grew in a original direction with a resolute emphasis on color.   Rich of 140 years of history, the ever-bold brand, innovated by offering jewels in motion, extravagant Haute Joaillerie collections, and incredible watches to become today one of the world's most prestigious watchmaker-jewelers.

As international Piaget brand ambassador, Jessica Chastain will make appearances at events around the world, adding pieces from Piaget’s jewelry and watch collections to her distinctive looks. By appointing an international brand ambassadress Piaget shows its commitment to jewelry and high jewelry.

Piaget has had a longstanding commitment to supporting cinema and the arts. On Saturday, February 21st, Piaget will continue to be the Premier sponsor of the Film Independent Spirit Awards for the eighth consecutive year.
