Martell
XO Cognac Breaks New Architectural Ground Again
Latest
Architect Edition Designed by Pritzker Prize-winner Christian de Portzamparc
This is the architect who designed the limited edition bottle so don't throw the empty bottle into the dustbin but sell it on eBay later.
Martell cognac enjoys a uniquely
prestigious positioning, one born of nearly three centuries of inspiration and
passion for cognacs of character and distinction, making it the favourite
choice of connoisseurs around the world. Now the brand has underlined its
commitment to blending that history with innovation, as well as its commitment
to the finer things in all spheres of life, with the launch in Hong Kong of the
latest Martell XO Exclusive Architect Edition, a light and airy new iteration
of the celebrated series that comes from a unique architectural talent.
After
collaborating in 2009 on previous versions of the Architect Edition with
architects Paul Andreu, for the newest second limited edition version of this
most prized of Martell cognacs, the brand is proud to join forces with French
architectural legend Christian de Portzamparc.
The first
Frenchman to be awarded the Pritzker Prize, the Nobel Prize of architecture, in
1994, De Portzamparc's work has included notable edifices such as the LVMH
Tower in New York and the French embassy in Berlin, as well as projects even
grander in scale, such as the entire Quartier Masséna neighbourhood of Paris,
and complexes of concert halls in Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Luxembourg.
What unites
all of De Portzamparc's celebrated constructions is his mastery of light and
its potential as a source of organic energy. And it's light that is at the
centre of his design for the Martell XO Exclusive Architect Edition. The
cognac's distinctive arch-shaped bottle, accented by a bird in flight, provides
the perfect receptacle to illuminate the amber colour of the liquid within. The
bottle, which carries De Portzamparc's signature close to the bottom,
is housed inside a carafe covered in criss-crossing horizontal lines, curving
and rising to accentuate the effervescent airiness of the design. Like previous
Architect Editions, it is a unique and fitting home for this most precious of
cognacs.
Designed to enhance the Martell XO
experience, the bottle holds within the same acclaimed blend of grapes from the
four main cognac growth areas. This creates a cognac of deep gold amber with a
full, rich and powerful nose. Its taste is complex and full of flavour with
hints of almond and vanilla, offering a long, lingering after-taste.
The ideal collectible
gift for an esteemed family member, friend or cognac lovers this Chinese New
Year, the Martell XO Exclusive Architect Edition is limited to 60 sets in Hong
Kong, available in selected premium wine and spirit shops at a price of
HK$3,200 OR around RM 1,600 in Malaysia but dont hold me to it.
About Martell
Martell is the oldest of
the major cognac houses and was founded in 1715 in the French Charente region
by Jean Martell. By 1721 Martell was already exporting more than 200,000L of
cognac to the United Kingdom.
Martell’s unique
reputation, both within France and beyond, rests upon its rich heritage,
together with the skill and creativity that Martell continuously strives to
hone. The House’s founding principles are based on the pursuit of perfection,
which Jean Martell made his motto. This standard has been the House of
Martell’s inspiration ever since. To this day, it lies at the heart of every
cognac it has created. Over the past few years Martell has successfully
launched the new Martell XO (2005), Martell Création Grand Extra (2007) and
L’Or de Jean Martell (2008/2009).
