WHILE THE OLYMPICS WERE GOING ON IN LONDON, STYLO THE MADE-IN-MALAYSIA FASHION FIESTA, HELD ITS OWN FASHION MARATHON OF SORTS IN SWANKY MAYFAIR.
Though the models were not world class athletes and did not win any medals, they still managed to work up plenty of sweat among the guests who were suitably heated up by the raw strength of Malaysian designs.
Instead of silk, shantung, batek, brocade, cotton, voile, chiffon, polyester or organza, the materials were ordinary household and garage stuff!
Under the creative hands and inspired eyes of Malaysian designers, these utilitarian and highly unglam materials like drinking straws and ordinary TV cables were magically transformed into wearable works of art!
Track and Field---made of cable wires!
Rhythmic Gymnastics---made of ordinary plastic toys!
Synchronised Swimming---made of plastic spoons painted black and cable ties!
Badminton Bonanza---made of shuttlecocks
Fencing Flair---made of cable wires and cable ties
Equestrian Extravaganza---made of 48,000 straws

As the world awaited the London 2012 closing, several young
Malaysians wowed the smart London set with their take on the Games’ environmental
stand at Stylolympics’ showing of “Fashion Fantasies” in upscale Mayfair.
22 year-old Hanif Naim, winner of Mercedes-Benz Stylo Designer 2012 supported by Shadow Chew, Elaine Gina and
Winnie Foo (finalists) highlighted 7 of the
Olympics’ favourite sports with their quirky fashion collection recycled from old
cutlery, cable wires, mosquito net, toilet rolls and garbage flown in from
Kuala Lumpur. The show was held at Aura Mayfair, a prestigious club co-owned by
another Malaysian, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes of Air Asia.
“Fashion, sports and recycling seemed like an ambitious idea
when London 2012 first mooted its inclinations but after seeing the opening it
would appear that no idea is too big here. It was important that our team
didn't disappoint”, said Datuk Nancy Yeoh, Founder & CEO of STYLO. “And they
did a tremendous job”, she added.
Badminton, cycling,
rhythmic gymnastics, fencing, synchronized swimming, track & field and
equestrian were chosen. Hanif’s ‘synchronized
swimming’ garment was made out of 6000 cable ties & 3000 black plastic
spoons while his ‘equestrian dress’ from 48,000 red, white and black drinking
straws. The shuttle cock headgear was a tribute to our very own Lee Chong Wei,
who won a silver at the this year’s Olympics.
However it was his ‘London
2012 Fantasy Ensemble’ which ultimately stole the show. The finale dress was a colorful
headgear depicting the many nations present at the Olympic Games and ‘the
dress’ was body art on skin featuring a magnified version of the London 2012
Olympics logo.
The Stylolympics 2012 show
was choreographed by celebrity model/dancer Sydney Jo Jackson. The former Kanye
West back up dancer and ex-girlfriend of Russell Brand will be one of Stylo’s
main London show producers for the Indian F1 race in October and Malaysian F1
race next March.
