'Chin Swee' means 'Very Beautiful' in Hokkien as all the best Chinese are Hokkien and Genting Group founder the late and great Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong was naturally a Hokkien just like me. At first I assumed 'Chin Swee Temple' simply meant 'Very Beautiful Temple' but Katherine Chew of revealed Chin Swee is also the name of a local deity in Anxi his hometown in Fujian, China. It was this deity who told him to leave his hometown for the Malay peninsula where he would find fame and fortune provided he donated extnesively t charity which of course he did.

It was also said the deity Chin Swee showed the young lad a vision of Genting Resort high in the clouds! When he started building the first Genting hotel, he made sure a temple was also constructed for his patron deity who encouraged the penniless 19 year old teenager to leave China for the promised land of Malaya.

The original Chin Swee was just a shrine and nowhere as grand and awesome as the current manifestation that is a cross of Har Par Villa, Big Buddha of Lanta island in Hong Kong and Great Buddha of Kamakura. As Genting Group prospered, Chin Swee shrine grew accordingly and today I think the blueprint is almost complete as it has Big Seated Buddha, Standing Kuan Yin, Queen Mother of Western Heaven, the 3 Pole Star Gods of Wealth, Health and Happiness, Eight Immortals and even Monkey King and his boss Tripitaka, Pig and Sandy! Plus a vision of Hell done in stone figures like the ones in Singapore's Haw Par Villa!
