THE BEST OF BOTSWANA FROM THE AIR, WATER, AND LAND
Orient-Express Hotels Ltd. is proud to introduce its thrilling seven day, six
night safari packages that showcase the best of the African bush from the
air, water, and land at its three luxury camps in Botswana.
Guests can start their African adventure at Maun Airport in Botswana, where they are met with their very own propeller plane to take them to the three camps – Eagle Island Camp and Khwai River Lodge in the Okavango Delta, or Savute Elephant Camp in the Chobe National Park. These intercamp flights are compact and low flying, allowing guests an incredible bird’s eye view of the vastness of the savannah and the intricacy of the region’s river systems. From the windows, vast herds of migrating wildebeest can be spotted, or perhaps a meandering family of elephants stripping leaves from trees to satisfy their appetites. At each of the camps, the light aircraft lands guests on a bush airstrip – no airport controls or customs here! Instead, guests may be met by a corps of curious giraffes or a cluster of antelope grazing under an acacia tree. The camps’ staff will be ready with a cooling drink to stave off the hot midday sun, and a 4x4 Landcruiser to take guests to the adjacent tented camps. At Eagle IslandCamp, remotely situated on an island amongst the lush vegetation of the Okavango Delta, guests can explore the surrounding waterways by motorized boat or traditional mokoro canoe. Paddling down the river with expert guides, the boats float past hippopotamuses snoozing in the water and large crocodiles basking on mudflats. Guests can also watch some 400 species of bird, including the rare fish eagle and lilac-breasted rollers, which nestle in the low lying trees along the river bank. The camps also offer a number of exhilarating land based extras. For example, from Savute Elephant Camp to Khwai River Lodge, guests can pay to drive their very own 4x4 Landcruiser through the bush. Attended by a senior safari guide, drivers are taught to track animals, drive through difficult terrain and, most importantly, find the perfect spot for watching the sunset over the bush with a picnic and a gin and tonic. In addition, you’ll have the personalised attention of the best guides and trackers for one-on-one walking explorations into the Moremi Wildlife Reserve from Eagle Island Camp and Khwai River Lodge. Savute Elephant Camp, located at the heart of the Chobe National Park, the ‘elephant capital of the world’, is an unrivaled base from which to witness Africa’s largest population of these elegant creatures in their natural habitat. Early morning game drives bring guests up close and personal, while equally exciting late afternoon excursions allow for sightings of impalas, baboons, warthogs, kudus, steenboks, bat-eared foxes, rock-climbing klipspringers, and black-backed jackals too. Nearby Khwai River Lodge is a popular spot for chance encounters with Africa’s Big Five – the lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. Early evening and twilight are the best times to observe animals hunting their prey, and guides will provide guests with special night-vision goggles so they don’t miss any of the incredible action - like a leopard feasting on an antelope whilst perched in a tree, or a pride of lions eating and purring loudly as they reap the rewards of their evening’s work. All three Botswana camps may be adventurous but they are also intimate and ultra- luxurious with a maximum of 12-15 lodgings. These luxury tent suites are all housed on raised wooden platforms, and offer great views of the surrounding bush. Each is furnished with a pair of cutting edge Zeiss Conquest HD 10x42T binoculars. Creature comforts extend to large four poster beds, en-suite bathrooms, and the luxury of discreet air conditioning. Oversized platforms afford guests with their own private observation deck, which is shaded by a traditional African thatch roof. Telescopes can be provided to enjoy undisrupted views of the Milky Way, while listening to the distant calls of hyena whooping at the moon.
