Shanghai Min Welcoming Year of the Horse with Auspicious ‘Lo Hei’ Chinese New Year Celebration Traditional festive menus available for ‘takeaway’ to serve at home Shanghai Min is welcoming the Year of the Horse with the auspicious ‘Lo Hei’ tradition of tossing raw fish salad plattersin the air with chopsticks to bring good fortune and prosperity. The colourful Chinese New Year celebration that dates back more than 750 years is a festive highlight at all nine Shanghai Min restaurants in Hong Kong priced HK$198, on a set menu designed for groups of six priced HK$1,988. According to tradition, families and friends call out "Lo Hei", meaning "mix it up", as they toss the ingredients while saying well wishes out loud to bring good luck and prosperity for all in the coming year. It is said that the higher the ingredients are tossed in the air, the more prosperity is assured. Available throughout Chinese New Year from January 13 to February 14, the Shanghai Min Fortune Toss features a piled platter of Shanghai delicacies including smoked salmon and a harvest of multi-coloured, traditional shredded vegetables, seasonings and sauces. Shanghai Min’s specialty version also includes a secret sweet and sour Shanghai-style sauce, creating a distinctive light aromatic taste and crisp texture that is uncommon in the Chinese New Year specialty. Once again, Shanghai Min is this year also offering popular Chinese New Year takeaway specialties which are perfect gifts for friends and relatives and ideal for home celebrations. No banquet or gatherings is complete without the signature Chinese New Year Casserole (in Cantonese, Poon Choi), another auspicious specialty symbolising union, prosperity and affluence on festive occasions. Shanghai Min’s extravagant version is priced HK$498, discounted from HK$668, featuring 15 kinds of luxurious dried seafood and delicacies, including Japanese sea cucumber, fish maw and pork knuckle, in unique Shanghai style – distinguished by its rich and refreshing soup, variety of ingredients and luscious yet non-greasy flavour. Eight Treasures Whole Braised Duck with Conpoy, reduced from HK$318 to HK$228, is another an all-time favourite in Chinese restaurants that can now be served at home, renowned for itstaste and fragrance, diversity of ingredients and complex preparation. Braised Pork Knuckles with Golden Eggs and Shanghai Cabbage, reduced from HK$318 to HK$228, is another essential for Shanghainese banquets. The complex dish requiring hours of preparation can now be served at home simply by re-heating. Finally, Shanghai New Year Pudding with Dah Chu Chiew & Osmanthus Honey completes any feast, reduced from HK$168 to HK$118 for a box of two – or just HK$88 a box for orders of ten boxes, or with dine-in spending of HK$300 or above. This New Year pudding blends Shanghai flavours with elements of Chinese New Year pastries, creating an intense fragrance of rice and a soft glutinoustexture, which is moulded into the shape of pair of carp fish and packaged in a lovable pink gift box to delight relatives and friends.
