I stayed at Gateway hotel in Hong Kong and must say its location is one of the very, very best in Kowloon!
Located on Canton Road which is similar to Hong Kong island's Central district, Gateway hotel is located WITHIN the massive Harbour City shopping complex!
The entrance to Gateway hotel from the shopping mall is very discreet and most people may miss it altogether. It does not boast a grand foyer like The Peninsula and Intercontinental hotels which are within easy walking distance and the lobby is remarkably small and so compact I had to ask if this is an annexe to the main lobby!
But no, there is only 1 lobby and this was it!
But there are 2 entrances---one for taxis to drop off guests since taxis are not allowed to stop on Canton Road to let passengers and their suitcases off. From the back entrance facing the harbour, I was taken to the lobby to check in.
The service is impeccable.
My taxi arrived before Princess Dr Becky Leogardo and I did not have a single Hong Kong dollar. So I asked an obviously irritated taxi driver to wait for my financier to arrive. But the porter who is Indian and speaks perfect Cantonese suggested he would pay first and I could reimburse him later! Now that is what I call going above the call of duty!
As for location, I walk out of Gateway hotel and straight into Harbour City, one of Hong Kong's most established and famous shopping malls! In fact, Balmain is adjacent to Gateway and from here, it is shopping haven all the way!
You are bound to get lost sooner or later but why worry, you are in shopping paradise and sooner and later you are bound to get your bearings.
Louis Vuitton has the biggest boutique in Hong Kong right here. So do Gucci, Versace, Ferragamo and Dior and Burberry across the street!
I stayed 3 days at Gateway and did not even reach Nathan Road which is 6 minutes walk! The only time we went outside Harbour City was to have dinner at nearby Spaghetti House!
You can stay in Gateway hotel and shop, dine and wine inside Harbour City and not venture out into the street!
As for the students' demonstration which was going in Admiralty across the harbour on Hong Kong island and Mongkok in Kowloon, there was no effect for tourists. I did not see or feel anything untoward and I would not even have realised a political demonstration was going on if I had not known in advance!
So visiting Hong Kong is fine though obviously you should avoid going near the demo areas as there are pro-Beijing supporters as well as anti-Beijing demonstrators! And you would not want to be caught in a cross fire!
