SHANG PALACE, ONE OF KUALA LUMPUR'S BEST CHINESE RESTAURANTS, HAS GONE PORK-FREE!

KEE@FSWMAG.COM
I FAINTED AND HAD TO BE HOSPITALISED FOR 3 DAYS IN INTENSIVE CARE WHEN I HEARD SHANG PALACE, POSSIBLY MALAYSIA'S BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT, HAS GONE PORK FREE!

WHY, I WONDER? MAYBE SHANGRI-LA SHOULD STOP SERVING ALCOHOL TOO AND ASK ALL STAFF WEAR TUDUNG AND HAVE WOMEN'S FLOOR AND SEPARATE MEN'S FLOOR. I NOTICE SOME OF THE UNIFORMS ARE RATHER SEXY.

ALSO, PORK-FREE IS NOT SYNONYMOUS WITH HALAL AS SHANG PALACE WILL HAVE TO PROVE THEIR CHICKEN, BEEF, LAMB AND VENISON ARE HALAL. ALSO THE COOKING UTENSILS LIKE POTS, PANS AND SERVING LADELS MUST BE BRAND NEW WITH RECEIPTS PROVING THEY HAVE BEEN NEWLY PURCHASED. AFTER ALL, FOR YEARS THESE POTS AND PANS HAVE BEEN USED TO COOK PIG MEAT USING LARD WHICH I LOVE AND THOUGH THEY ARE WASHED DAILY, MUSLIMS WILL REFUSE TO EAT FROM SUCH UTENSILS.

ALSO THE CHEFS AT SHANG PALACE ARE NOT 100% MUSLIMS AND THEY ARE ALLOWED TO EAT PIG MEAT AT HOME. IMAGINE FINGERS THAT CUT PIG MEAT AND ATE PORK ARE USED TO CUT MEAT AND VEGETABLES FOR MUSLIMS! THOUGH THEIR FINGERS AND HANDS ARE WASHED CLEAN, MUSLIMS WILL NOT ENJOY THE THOUGHT OF PORK-LOVING FINGERS HANDLING AND PREPARING THEIR FOOD. SO SHANG PALACE MUST HAVE MUSLIM CHEFS AND STAFF.

I ASKED MY MUSLIM FRIENDS AND THEY ALL AGREE WITH ME. THEY POINT OUT SHANGRI-LA HAS MANY EXCELLENT, HALAL RESTAURANTS LIKE LAFITE, LEMON GARDEN, ZIPANGU ETC SO THEY ARE NOT HARD UP TO DINE AT SHANG PALACE.

SO BY TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYONE, SHANG PALACE HAS ENDED UP PLEASING NO ONE! CHINESE DINERS ARE PISSED OFF THERE IS NOW NO CHAR SIEW OR SIEW YOK WHILE MUSLIMS WOULD RATHER NOT PATRONISE A FAMOUS RESTAURANT LONG KNOWN FOR PIG MEAT DISHES.

THERE ARE MANY OTHER GREAT CHINKY RESTAURANTS IN KL SERVING PORK AS NOW THERE IS NO PORK AT SHANG PALACE. ALSO PORK FREE DIMSUM IS SACRILEGIOUS AND MY ANCESTORS ARE TURNING IN THEIR GRAVE IN CHINA.

LAUNCH OF A NEW DELECTABLE MENU AT SHANG PALACE,
SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, KUALA LUMPUR

In line with our other dining operations, Shang Palace at the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, will launch a pork-free menu from 25 September 2014.

Deliciousness rules, as Chinese Executive Chef Tan Kim Weng puts his masterful and creative touch to the new dishes on the menu.

The finest pork-free Cantonese dimsum, soups, appetisers, main dishes as well as the chef’s signature dishes will make their debut on this new menu.

Shang Palace will continue to showcase authentic Cantonese cuisine and provincial specialities at their best, using premium local and imported ingredients from sustainable and organic sources.

The chef’s signature dishes include the Slow Braised Beef Short Rib with Garlic and Chinese Herb Sauce, Deep-fried Scallop Stuffed with Seafood Paste coated with filo pastry shreds and mayonnaise, Pan-fried Foie Gras with Vinegar Sauce and Stuffed Scallop with Spicy Bean Sauce, and Braised Abalone with Sun-dried Scallop stuffed in Wintermelon.

The chef also offers the Combination Cantonese Dimsum Platter – with shrimp dumpling, chicken dumpling with scallop, crispy shrimp roll and spring roll.

There is also a comprehensive pork-free dimsum menu, with more than 50 items in it. This should make a pleasing yum-cha lunch for everyone.

The new Shang Palace Barbecue Combination Platter serves up roasted crispy duck, barbecued chicken roll with glazed honey and braised farm chicken with supreme soya sauce.

A pork-free Fried Hokkien Noodles with prawns and chicken should delight diners, as well as Wok-fried Crispy Noodles with Freshwater King Prawn.

Special set menus with six to nine courses, with some designed for two or more people, and others for a table of 10, are also available at Shang Palace. There is also a vegetarian menu.
