Festival Royal Patron, Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Tunku Ja’afar – who has stood in the role since the Festival’s inception – sat across from the stage in the scintillating Theatre of Cuisines, surrounded by captains of industry, all there to take global gourmet safaris, sampling portions from each of the 28 participating restaurants in this year’s festival. Global indeed as fare from the four corners of the Earth were well represented, from Sri Lankan to Cantonese, Modern French to Italian, Japanese to Thai, and a fusion of International and Western specialities.

The month long food extravaganza has become a culinary milestone on the Malaysian calendar proffering specially created Festival Menus abounding with creativity and overflowing with flavour. At no other time in the year is the gastronomic landscape of the country so alive with innovation as Festival restaurants try to outdo each other in friendly competition, raising the standards in doing so year on year.

As each of the Festival Master Chefs strutted on stage, the MC announced them in synch with the MIGF Red Hot Chefs TV ad, they struck a pose while media cameras flashed and the crowd looked on. Then, under a sea of confetti, with Dato’ Steve and Tunku Naquiyuddin on stage, the Festival was officially declared open.

Also making a special appearance was the spanking new Jaguar F-Type Coupe in jet black. The stunning vehicle, with a gently sloping roofline and sultry silhouette, was uncovered by Dato’ Steve immediately following the chefs’ gambit. A vision of automotive beauty, the car fit like a glove into the Theatre of Cuisines, alongside the gorgeous food on display.
