Culinary Creativity
SHOWTIME!
DANCE TIME!
With bite-sized edible works of art, tasty yet informative workshops,
luxury gourmet products and upscale property purchasing opportunities, Taste
MIGF 2014 opened the official MIGF month of October with a bang!
Since 2001,
the Malaysian International Gourmet Festival has attempted to spotlight the
burgeoning fine dining scene in Malaysia with a variety of special menus,
offers and exhibitions, and this year's Taste MIGF – the two-day preview event
of the Festival – kicked things off in spectacular fashion.
Held over
the weekend of the 27th and the 28th of September in the
Sunway Convention Centre, there was an endless stream of things to see, smell,
taste and touch for the average food-lover at the Festival. Food-tasting,
cooking classes, wine appreciation, gourmet shopping – the list was endless.
A typical
journey began with the redemption of Gourmet Dollars (the currency used for the
tasting portions) from the registration counters with an average value of RM50
per booklet.
Once you had
collected your MIGF bag and wristband, you would then be granted access into
the awe-inspiring Theatre of Cuisines, with booths by the 28 participating
restaurants encircling the area.
Each was
exquisitely decorated with displays of food, ingredients, artwork, candles and
more in styles that reflected the concept and character of their restaurant,
attempting to outdo each other with their creativity.
Smiling
serving staff would enthusiastically greet you as you pass, extolling the
virtues of their artistic sampling portions and urging you to try a bite.
If
you decided to accept, you'd only need to tear off the requisite number of
Gourmet Dollars to exchange for the portion of your choice, and receive a
delicious sample in return that often looked almost too good to eat.
Around noon,
guests would be treated to a cooking demonstration by the renowned Chef Wan,
who kept up an enthusiastic and entertaining stream of familiar chatter as he
moved expertly around his station, cooking up a storm for the hungry onlookers.
When you'd
eaten as much as you could fit in your stomach, you had the option of joining a
variety of workshops and cooking classes upstairs, ranging from lifestyle
workshops such as wine tasting, cocktail mixing, networking and aromatherapy
classes to cooking sessions with experienced chefs, serving anything from
decadent Atlantic lobster to tiramisu and cheesecake.
Of course,
samples were provided – freshly made for you on the spot!

CHEF EUGENE LEE OF TANZINI SHOWS HOW IT IS DONE
How many
opportunities would you ever have to speak directly to a knowledgeable chef or
a renowned wine expert in an intimate class? Taste MIGF gave its visitors
exactly that opportunity and they made full use of it, quizzing the experts who
were only too happy to share their experiences.
What's a good substitute for
sugar syrup in cocktail mixing? What are the other ways quinoa can be cooked?
They answered all these and more.
If you were
lucky enough to be in the Theatre again around late afternoon, perhaps you
would have caught the world pizza-tossing champion Pasqualino Barbasso in
action as he dazzled crowds with his unique skills.
THIS PANCAKE LOOKS INNOCUOUS
UNTIL YOU THROW IT INTO THE AIR!
Spinning,
twirling, even juggling the doughy discs (three at once at one point!) amid a
mist of flour to a rhythm of lively Italian music, all with a wide smile on his
face, he had the crowd clapping and cheering as he worked his magic,
culminating in tossing a piece of dough that was long enough to drape over a
child like a giant poncho – which he did!
Shopaholics
would have had a field day as well the moment they ventured into the Epicure
Gourmet Village, located just next to the Theatre of Cuisines.
Fine food
products, fresh seafood, gourmet meats and cheeses, premium coffees and teas,
the newest technological appliances, excellent wines, inventive cocktails, even
a booth by famed culinary institute Le Cordon Bleu – almost everyone left the
hall laden with goodies of all sorts to take home.

Other sights
worth seeing included the new Jaguar F-Type Coupe, which you could pose with to
snap a picture of, some of the newest luxury properties to be built in SS2 and
Klang, a selection of books and posters by BookXcess – host of the Big Bad Wolf
Book Sale – and product demonstrations by Samsung.
Pretty
representatives by French brewery Kronenbourg handed out discount coupons to
patrons to sample their new beers, but they weren't the only ones working the
floor as towering stilt-walkers dressed in a variety of outlandish costumes
that featured pizza, cupcakes, and cooking apparatus chanted MIGF slogans and
happily posed for pictures.
They say all
things must come to an end, but though 10 pm on Sunday saw the curtain fall on
Taste MIGF, the Festival itself is only just beginning. Over the month of
October, all the 28 participating restaurants will be featuring their special
Festival Menus, so if you missed out on sampling their cuisine, visit the restaurants
themselves for a fuller experience!
